Estimating geothermal and background radiation hotspots from primordial radionuclide concentrations in geology of South Africa

open access: bronzeBook of Abstracts, 2023
Naturally occurring radionuclides are the main generator of geothermal energy in the Earth's crust and mantle. The generated energy is consequently directly proportional to the concentrations of the three main naturally occurring radionuclides (uranium, thorium and potassium), which are primordial in origin.

South Africa's geothermal energy hotspots inferred from subsurface temperature and geology

open access: diamondSouth African Journal of Science, 2017
South Africa intends to mitigate its carbon emissions by developing renewable energy from solar, wind and hydro, and investigating alternative energy sources such as natural gas and nuclear. Low-enthalpy geothermal energy is becoming increasingly popular around the world, largely as a result of technological advances that have ...

Mapping hotspots of malaria transmission from pre-existing hydrology, geology and geomorphology data in the pre-elimination context of Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania [PDF]

open access: goldParasites & Vectors, 2015
Larval source management strategies can play an important role in malaria elimination programmes, especially for tackling outdoor biting species and for eliminating parasite and vector populations when they are most vulnerable during the dry season.

Assessment of Geological Heritage Sites and Their Significance for Geotouristic Exploitation: The Case of Lefkas, Meganisi, Kefalonia and Ithaki Islands, Ionian Sea, Greece

open access: yesGeosciences, 2022
Geological heritage or geoheritage refers to the total of geosites, i.e., areas of high geological interest in a given area. Geosites have a high potential of attracting geotourists, thus contributing to the development of the local economy.

Compositional and source patterns of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils in southwestern Ghana using robust compositional contamination index (RCCI) and k-means cluster analysis

open access: yesEnvironmental Challenges, 2021
Soils are heavily impacted by geogenic and anthropogenic factors. They form an integral part in supporting agriculture, and the natural climate. This study investigated the soil chemistry in the Wassa and Prestea-Huni Valley areas in southwestern Ghana ...
