Saving Water to Survive: Alternative Water Loss Strategies Could Explain Color Polymorphism Maintenance in a Lacertid Lizard

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We demonstrate that red male Podarcis muralis exhibit higher evaporative water loss compared to other morphs, indicating a physiological strategy that prioritizes hydroregulation over fine thermoregulation. This suggests red morphs are adapted to cooler, wetter niches, while white and yellow morphs possess superior water conservation mechanisms to ...

A hygrothermal model for predicting house dust mite response to environmental conditions in dwellings [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
House-dust mite antigens are a major contributor to allergic sensitisation. Since temperature and humidity are crucial to house-dust mite physiology, there is considerable interest in reducing mite populations by controlling the indoor environment.

Interference in foraging behaviour of European and American house dust mites Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae (Acari: Pyroglyphidae) by catmint, Nepeta cataria (Lamiaceae).

open access: yes, 2012
The European and American house dust mites, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and D. farinae, have a huge impact upon human health worldwide due to being the most important indoor trigger of atopic diseases such as asthma, rhinitis and atopic dermatitis ...

Multiplex LAMP assay for detecting the prevalent species of dust mites Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus in the domestic environment

open access: yesScientific Reports
Dermatophagoides farina (D. farinae) and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (D. pteronyssinus) are the prevalent kinds of house dust mites (HDMs). HDMs are common inhalant allergens that cause a range of allergic diseases, such as rhinitis, atopic dermatitis,

Microarrayed Allergen Molecules Distinguish IgE Sensitisation to Blomia tropicalis and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
This study established a microarray containing a representative panel of purified Blo t and Der p allergens for the identification of patients sensitised to Blo t and/or Der p. Results indicate that the microarray based on Blo t and Der p allergens is a useful tool for the identification of Blo t‐ and/or Der p‐sensitised patients. The microarray may be

Expressed sequence tag survey of gene expression in the scab mite Psoroptes ovis--allergens, proteases and free-radical scavengers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Psoroptes ovis, the causative agent of sheep scab, is an important ectoparasitic mite infecting sheep, goats and cattle. Infection is characterized by an extensive dermatitis, scab formation and intense itching.

Preventive Application of House Dust Mite‐Sublingual Immunotherapy Induces Blocking Antibodies in Sensitized Preschool Children

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
HDM‐pSLIT induced IgG, IgG1, and IgG4 specific to major HDM allergens in sensitized non‐allergic preschool children without increasing HDM‐sIgE. It blunted the development of new sensitizations and reduced HDM reactivity in skin and basophils. HDM‐pSLIT treated children displayed a blocking effect on HDM‐induced basophil activation.

Natural History of Alternaria Sensitisation and Association With Asthma and Rhinitis From Childhood to Adulthood

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
We aimed to characterise Alternaria sensitisation trajectories from childhood to adulthood; we compared SPT, whole‐extract sIgE and rAlt a 1, and assessed their longitudinal association with asthma and rhinitis in the Isle of Wight birth cohort. Alternaria sensitisation in the Isle of Wight Birth Cohort emerges mainly in late adolescence and, when ...

Mapping Allergen B‐ and T‐Cell Epitopes: Technological Advances and Their Role in Precision Allergy Therapy

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Allergic diseases arise from aberrant immune recognition of otherwise harmless environmental proteins and are driven by epitope‐specific interactions between allergens and the adaptive immune system. Although component‐resolved diagnostics have improved molecular characterisation of sensitization, they remain limited to whole‐allergen ...

Mites That Attack Humans

open access: yesEDIS, 1999
This document provides an overview of mites that attack humans, including household, bird, insect, rodent, scabies, and house dust mites. It details their biology, life cycles, and the health issues they cause, such as skin irritation and dermatitis ...
