Distribution of Household Expenditure
2012In this chapter we use consumption expenditure data to measure household welfare. These data are preferred to income data for traditional reasons—less measurement error, greater accuracy and less seasonality effect. However, income and consumption expenditure are highly correlated and consumption expenditure is a good indicator of welfare status.

Journal of Consumer Research, 1991Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Surveys were used to investigate factors influencing household expenditures for services in the United States. There were significant differences between families with full-time and part-time working wives in expenditures on child care, food away from home, and total services.
