Floral resource strips enhance parasitoid abundance and diversity in apple orchards and promote agroecological advances in a South African biosphere reserve

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Floral resource strips within apple orchards increased parasitoid abundance and influenced community composition, enhancing local biodiversity in the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve's transition zone. Ruderal and natural fynbos habitats supported higher parasitoid richness and abundance, emphasising the importance of conserving semi‐natural habitats ...

Filling gaps in flower fly distributions: first record of Aneriophora aureorufa (Philippi, 1865) (Diptera, Syrphidae) from Argentina [PDF]

open access: yesCheck List, 2019
The genus Aneriophora Stuardo & Cortés 1952, previously considered endemic to Chile, is recorded for the first time from Argentina.

Distance transform: a tool for the study of animal colour patterns [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Summary The information in animal colour patterns plays a key role in many ecological interactions; quantification would help us to study them, but this is problematic. Comparing patterns using human judgement is subjective and inconsistent. Traditional

Bee community and trait‐based responses to fire in a Mediterranean landscape

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Fire drives a short‐term increase in bee abundance and diversity, despite its strong negative impact on floral resources. Acting as an environmental filter, fire shapes bee communities as increased post‐fire fine‐scale heterogeneity favors bees with specific functional traits such as ground‐nesting and generalist species.

Inoculation of pear flowers with Metschnikowia reukaufii and Acinetobacter nectaris enhances attraction of honeybees and hoverflies, but does not increase fruit and seed set

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
Currently, one of the most important challenges is to provide sufficient and affordable food and energy for a fast-growing world population, alongside preserving natural habitats and maintaining biodiversity.

Environmental analysis of conservationally significant Eumerus and Platycheirus species (Diptera: Syrphidae) in Serbia [PDF]

open access: yesZbornik Matice Srpske za Prirodne Nauke, 2018
Due to raising environmental pressures, the number of species exposed to risk of extinction is also increasing. One of the first steps in species preservation is their legal protection. However, it is impossible to protect all species, therefore,

Hoverfly ( Eristalis tenax ) pursuit of artificial targets

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 2022
ABSTRACT The ability to visualize small moving objects is vital for the survival of many animals, as these could represent predators or prey. For example, predatory insects, including dragonflies, robber flies and killer flies, perform elegant, high-speed pursuits of both biological and artificial targets.

Forest type influence on Heliconia‐dipteran interaction networks

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Responses to forest type depended on the developmental stage of dipterans. Bract traits and forest type influenced larval abundance, but forest type had no impact on adult alpha and beta diversity. Heliconia‐dipteran interaction networks showed a nested pattern for both forest types.

Life cycle and growth pattern of the endangered myrmecophilous Microdon myrmicae (Diptera: Syrphidae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2012
In Europe there are only a few species of the syrphid fly Microdon, which live in the nests of various genera of ants. For most of these rare flies, details of their biology, larval behaviour and relationships with their hosts are still not yet well ...

Landscape or local? Distinct responses of flower visitor diversity and interaction networks to different land use scales in agricultural tropical highlands

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, 2022
Land use change has been identified as a cause for biodiversity loss and has significant effects on pollinators and their interactions with plants. Interaction network analyses complement diversity estimators by providing information on the stability and
