Differences in Human Audio Localization Performance between a HRTF- and a non-HRTF Audio System

Proceedings of the 8th Audio Mostly Conference, 2013
Spatial audio solutions have been around for a long time in real-time applications, but yielding spatial cues that more closely simulate real life accuracy has been a computational issue, and has often been solved by hardware solutions. This has long been a restriction, but now with more powerful computers this is becoming a lesser and lesser concern ...

Speech Intelligibility and HRTF

2019
This chapter describes the effects of the HRTF on speech intelligibility. An HRTF causes an interaural phase difference. Under the presence of a masker, the threshold of the target sound is affected by the relationship in the interaural phase difference between the target sound and the masker.

Interpolating HRTF for auditory virtual reality

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1996
Two (linear and nonlinear) interpolation methods of the head-related transfer function (HRTF) are exploited in order to realize virtual auditory localization. In both methods, HRTFs of the left and right ears are represented by a delay time and a common impulse response, where delay time is determined so that the cross correlation of two HRTFs takes ...

Distance Perception and HRTF

2019
Reproduction and control of sound image distance are also important elements in three-dimensional acoustics. However, quantitative reproduction and control of sound image distance have not yet been realized. In particular, sound images in the front direction are often localized inside of the head or extremely close to the forehead. In this chapter, the

Signal Processing of HRTF

2019
In order to analyze HRTFs and apply them to acoustic VR systems, signal processing technique is required. This chapter introduces the methods for calculating the ITD and ILD, and extracting the spectral cues. Furthermore, the methods for convolution of the HRIRs and a sound source signal is introduced.

Measurement Method for HRTF

2019
In order to actually measure HRTFs, practical knowledge is also required in addition to understanding the theory of the HRTF. This chapter introduces the author’s knowledge and experience as far as possible, so as to enable the readers to measure HRTFs by themselves.

Comparison of HRTF Databases

2019
Several research institutes have released databases of HRTFs. This chapter introduces representative databases and compares them from the viewpoints of spectral cues and pinna shape.

Individualization of HRTF by spectral warping

2001
Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTF) vary upon individuals due to the specificity of one's head/ear/torso shapes. Perceptual artefacts entailed by the use of non-individual HRTF can be significantly reduced by scaling in frequency the non individual HRTF to best fit the listener's ones.
