The EO galaxy M87 harbours the prototypical and most studied example of an optical jet. First observed by Curtis in 1918, it remained little more than a curiosity, until Baade and Minkowski studied it in 1954 and first used the term “jet” to describe the sequence of optical knots extending to about 20″ from the nucleus.

Hubble Vision: Astronomy with the Hubble Space Telescope
Physics Education, 1997The phenomenon of spherical aberration received a lot of attention in the summer of 1990 when NASA realized that its two billion dollar telescope did not work as expected. The small but significant spherical aberration in the main mirror of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was a big blow to NASA.

The Hubble Space Telescope Observatory
Physics Today, 1990No other astronomy project has taken so long to develop, proven so technologically challenging or cost so much as the Hubble Space Telescope. At a development cost of about $1.5 billion, the HST is big science by the standards of modern physics. Soon after the HST is launched on 12 April, the physics community will determine if the resources and ...

Creation of the Hubble Space Telescope
Experimental Astronomy, 2009The Hubble Space Telescope has been the most successful space astronomy project to date, producing images that put the public in awe and images and spectra that have produced many scientific discoveries. It is the natural culmination of a dream envisioned when rocket flight into space was first projected and a goal set for the US space program soon ...

Training the Hubble space telescope flight team
IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, 1995As the results demonstrate, members of the flight team judged, on average, that the use of a virtual environment for training had a positive effect on their job performance during the HST repair and maintenance mission. Moreover, audio and visual cues provided a positive aid in using the virtual environment.

Operating the hubble space telescope
Acta Astronautica, 1988The Hubble Space Telescope and its capabilities are described, and techniques of operating the observatory are discussed. The operational ground system functions are described. Some projections of what might be learned with this new instrument are presented.

Hubble Space Telescope overview
29th Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 1991A general overview of the performance and current status of the Hubble Space Telescope is presented. Most key spacecraft subsystems are operating well, equaling or exceeding specifications. Spacecraft thermal properties, power, and communications, are superb. The only spacecraft subsystem to have failed, a gyro, is briefly discussed.

Technology and the Hubble Space Telescope
2nd Aerospace Maintenance Conference, 1986The components of the Hubble Space Telescope which is a 13.1 m long, 4.27 m in diameter, and weighs 11,000 kg are described. The telescope will be placed in a 600-km circular orbit of 28.5 deg inclination and it has an expected service life of 15 years.

The Impact of the Hubble Space Telescope
2020Although impact is an elusive concept, the Hubble Space Telescope has had a measurable effect on culture, not only through its imagery but also through its success in deepening our understanding of the universe and our place in it. Both science and culture would be poorer without its revelations.

From the Hubble space Telescope to the James WEBB Space Telescope
Il Nuovo Cimento B, 2005I summarize the characteristics of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and present some of its most recent results. I also discuss the concept and the plans for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). JWST will be tlie successor to the Hubble Space Telescope and may be launched as early as mid-2011.
