open access: yesEstudios Sociales, 2012
El enfoque de medios de vida sostenibles permite conocer el contexto de vulnerabilidad, las estrategias de vida implementadas y proporciona un marco para comprender las causas y dimensiones de la pobreza, sin enfocarse solamente en unos cuantos factores.

Schizophyllum commune Fr. asociado a Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex A. Juss.)

Layered Sites of Environmental Justice: Considering the Case of Prisons*

open access: yesSociological Inquiry, Volume 93, Issue 4, Page 852-876, November 2023., 2023
A growing body of scholarship highlights the merits of fusing green criminology and environmental justice frameworks to better understand intersections among carceral systems, race‐ and class‐based stratification, and environmental harm. This paper explores how correctional institutions (CIs) with known histories of federal environmental law violations

Doubly structured sparsity for grouped multivariate responses with application to functional outcome score modeling

open access: yesStatistics in Medicine, Volume 42, Issue 15, Page 2619-2636, 10 July 2023., 2023
Summary This work is motivated by the need to accurately model a vector of responses related to pediatric functional status using administrative health data from inpatient rehabilitation visits. The components of the responses have known and structured interrelationships.

The Effect of Spacing Versus Massing on Orthographic Learning

open access: yesReading Research Quarterly, Volume 58, Issue 3, Page 361-372, July/August/September 2023., 2023
Abstract Distributing study opportunities over time typically improves the retention of verbal material compared to consecutive study trials, yet little is known about the influence of temporal spacing on orthographic form learning specifically. This experiment sought to obtain and compare estimates of the magnitude of the spacing effect on written ...

The slow and steady salinization of Sparkling Lake, Wisconsin

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 8, Issue 1, Page 74-82, February 2023., 2023
The concentrations of conservative solutes in seepage lakes are determined by the relative inputs of precipitation vs. groundwater. In areas of road salt application, seepage lakes may be at high risk of salinization depending on groundwater flow. Here, we revisit a 1992 analysis on the salinization of Sparkling Lake, a deep seepage lake in Northern ...

Variability in fluvially‐dominated, fine‐grained, shallow‐water deltas

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 69, Issue 7, Page 2779-2813, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Fluvially‐dominated, fine‐grained, shallow‐water deltas are more variable than is generally recognized. Studies of the Mississippi River imply rather persistent river‐mouth jet dynamics, resulting in either progressive channel bifurcation around middle‐ground mouth bars on lobate deltas, or steady channel progradation to form elongate deltas ...

High species richness and turnover of vascular epiphytes is associated with water availability along the elevation gradient of Volcán Maderas, Nicaragua

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 11, November 2022., 2022
We documented and examined patterns of species richness and abundance of tropical epiphytes along the entire elevational gradient of an isolated, island volcano. Our complete and detailed sampling along the gradient improves our understanding of vascular epiphyte distribution and its association to weather variables, based on direct observations.

Regression discontinuity designs for time‐to‐event outcomes: An approach using accelerated failure time models

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series A (Statistics in Society), Volume 185, Issue 3, Page 1216-1246, July 2022., 2022
Abstract Regression discontinuity designs (RDDs) have been developed for the estimation of treatment effects using observational data, where a treatment is administered using an externally defined decision rule, linked to a continuous assignment variable.
