Solar Gate, Hull – form through function
The Structural Engineer, 2019The Solar Gate sculpture is one of a number of Arup-led interventions in Hull made possible through the city being awarded the title of UK City of Culture for 2017. The ethereal structure’s fabrication made use of local industry, allowing Hull’s industrial heritage and knowledge to reinvent itself to produce cutting-edge, contemporary art.

Submarine Hull Form Optimization Case Study
Naval Engineers Journal, 2000ABSTRACTThe potential benefits of full stern submarines are investigated. First, a parametric‐based arrangement study is conducted. The results of this study yield two variants which are identical in terms of installed horsepower and mission hardware, but with deferent stern taper.

Application of flexible forming process to hull structure forming
Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2010The conventional line heating method has been applied for the manufacture of various curved blocks used for hull structures in the ship-building industry. However, it has low economical efficiency and productivity because most of its processes are based entirely on the skillful experience of experts.

Hull Form Optimization for Hydrodynamic Performance
Marine Technology and SNAME News, 2004A method for optimizing hull forms with respect to their hydrodynamic performance in calm and rough water is presented. The method is based on an initial optimization of a parent hull form for seakeeping and the improvement of the resulting optimum hull form for calm water resistance. In the first part of the method, variant hull forms differing from a

Re-Evaluation of the Planing Hull Form
Journal of Hydronautics, 1980This paper defines the planing hull form, presents a brief historical evolution of the craft, summarizes the recently develpoed technology and its impact upon design and application, and, finally, discusses the potential of the craft. The authors demonstrate the inappropriateness of stereotyping planing craft as small underpowered boats which must ...

TOWARDS AN IMPROVED HULL FORM DESIGN METHODOLOGY
Naval Engineers Journal, 1983ABSTRACTThis paper presents a surface ship hull form design methodology which makes use of a powerful, general‐purpose approach to decision making. The four steps of this approach are:1. Development of the Problem Statement2. Design3. Evaluation4. SelectionTo illustrate the utilization of the methodology, the development of the hull form during the ...
