In the British Isles, cattle are the most commonly infected animals and may develop red water disease. The following case is only the third in the world recorded in a human and the first in the British Isles.

Neurological manifestations of human babesiosis

Babesiosis is a worldwide emerging infectious disease caused by intraerythrocytic protozoa that are transmitted by Ixodid ticks, or less commonly through blood transfusion or transplacentally. Although headache and lethargy are common symptoms, babesiosis is uncommonly associated with specific neurological dysfunction in humans.
