During the last 15 years, the diagnostic approach to metabolic disorders of the skeleton has been considerably enhanced by new developments in bone densitometry and biochemical measurements of ionized calcium, parathyroid hormone, vitamin D metabolites, bone alkaline phosphatase, and urinary excretion of bone collagen fragments.

Xenogeneic Bone Grafting in Humans
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1983The beneficial effect of a composite autologous red bone marrow and bone graft is well documented in experimental animals. In an attempt to improve the osteogenic potential of xenogeneic bone for clinical use, xenogeneic bone was combined with autologous red marrow and used in 110 bone grafting operations in 98 patients.
