Moving from talk to action: A commitment to ensuring equity must ground our efforts to transform the human experience

open access: yesPatient Experience Journal, 2021
When we first introduced the call for submissions for this special issue last August, we were still churning in the first wave of the COVID pandemic. Just three to four months from the start of an unending rash of unexpected and harsh realities that we ...

Study on Human-Variability-Respecting Optimal Control Affecting Human Interaction Experience [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Broad application of human-machine interaction (HMI) demands advanced and human-centered control designs for the machine's automation. Human natural motor action shows stochastic behavior, which has so far not been respected in HMI control designs. Using a previously presented novel human-variability-respecting optimal controller we present a study ...

Bioengineering facets of the tumor microenvironment in 3D tumor models: insights into cellular, biophysical and biochemical interactions

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The tumor microenvironment is a dynamic, multifaceted complex system of interdependent cellular, biochemical, and biophysical components. Three‐dimensional in vitro models of the tumor microenvironment enable a better understanding of these interactions and their impact on cancer progression and therapeutic resistance.

Focus on optimal health, not ideal health

open access: yesPatient Experience Journal, 2021
Providers strive to help patients live the best, healthiest life they are capable of living. However, those efforts should involve a careful assessment of what the patient’s optimal health status is.

Reality of Human Experience and the Search for Unity

open access: yesRecoletos Multidisciplinary Research Journal, 2016
Man’s basic attitude towards reality determines his end. Man either opts to accept reality and becomes an optimist or denies and becomes a pessimist. The study presented the reality of human experience.

On the Utility of Accounting for Human Beliefs about AI Intention in Human-AI Collaboration [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
To enable effective human-AI collaboration, merely optimizing AI performance without considering human factors is insufficient. Recent research has shown that designing AI agents that take human behavior into account leads to improved performance in human-AI collaboration. However, a limitation of most existing approaches is their assumption that human

Advanced glycation end products promote the release of endothelial cell‐derived mitocytosis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Under diabetic conditions, AGEs induce mitochondrial damage in HUVECs, activating migrasome‐mediated mitocytosis. Migrasomes encapsulate damaged mitochondria and are released into the extracellular space, facilitating intercellular mitochondrial transfer.

Enhancing Human Experience in Human-Agent Collaboration: A Human-Centered Modeling Approach Based on Positive Human Gain [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Existing game AI research mainly focuses on enhancing agents' abilities to win games, but this does not inherently make humans have a better experience when collaborating with these agents. For example, agents may dominate the collaboration and exhibit unintended or detrimental behaviors, leading to poor experiences for their human partners.

Rebuilding a foundation of trust: A call to action in creating a safe environment for everyone

open access: yesPatient Experience Journal, 2021
Well before the COVID-19 pandemic, incivility and physical threats directed toward healthcare employees and often registered nurses was a growing concern by Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) leaders.

AToM: Adaptive Theory-of-Mind-Based Human Motion Prediction in Long-Term Human-Robot Interactions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Humans learn from observations and experiences to adjust their behaviours towards better performance. Interacting with such dynamic humans is challenging, as the robot needs to predict the humans accurately for safe and efficient operations. Long-term interactions with dynamic humans have not been extensively studied by prior works.
