Setting up the first human milk bank in Uganda: a success story from Nsambya hospital

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition
BackgroundThe World Health Organization (WHO) strongly recommends the use of donor human milk (DHM) for low birth weight infants when mother’s own milk is unavailable or insufficient. However, the use of DHM requires the availability of human milk banks (

Emerging Milk Exchanges: Human Milk Banking, Sharing and Technoscience [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Human milk is being exchanged today in ways that are increasingly fraught and contentious. Non-profit milk banks are working hard to keep up with increasing demand from neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) for banked donor milk (BDM); informal exchanges

Developmental Environmental Chronotoxicity by Polystyrene Nanoplastics Exacerbates High‐Fat Diet‐Induced Pediatric MAFLD Through Circadian Disruption and Mitochondrial Dysfunction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Polystyrene nanoplastics exacerbate high‐fat diet‐induced metabolic dysfunction in an age‐dependent manner. Juvenile mice exhibit greater susceptibility, characterized by circadian disruption, impaired mitochondrial function, reduced energy metabolism, and enhanced hepatic lipid accumulation.

Salvianolic Acid a Disrupts the HSP90α‐AKT‐PERK Ternary Complex to Alleviate Atherosclerosis by Activating Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress of Senescent Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Salvianolic acid A (SAA) selectively induces senescent vascular smooth muscle cell apoptosis, alleviating atherosclerosis. Mechanistically, SAA targets heat shock protein 90 alpha (HSP90α) to disrupt the protein inase B (AKT)‐PRKR‐Like Endoplasmic Reticulum Kinase (PERK) scaffold, driving ubiquitin‐proteasome‐dependent AKT degradation.

Influence of Holder Pasteurisation on DHA concentrations in human breast milk

open access: yes, 2008
Human breast milk is universally recognized as the optimal food for term and pre-term infant. In the absence of an adequate supply of breast milk, mothers are offered term breast milk from human milk banks, which collect, process and store milk from ...

LAPTM5 Downregulation‐Driven VAMP8 Phosphorylation Impairs Autophagosome‐Lysosome Fusion and Aggravates Septic Acute Lung Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
LAPTM5 functions as a critical molecular scaffold bridging PGAM5 and VAMP to facilitate PGAM5‐mediated dephosphorylation of VAMP8. This cascade promotes autophagosome‐lysosome fusion, restores impaired autophagic flux, and clears damaged mitochondria, thereby mitigating cellular oxidative stress and systemic inflammation.

Human Milk Banking: An Indian Experience

open access: yes, 2018
As part of integrated newborn care, human milk banks can reduce death and illness as well as lower health-care costs for infants born prematurely, especially with birthweights less than 1,500 g, and for infants born in resource-limited settings without ...

PLOD1 Catalytic Activity Stabilizes ENO1 by Limiting FBXW7‐dependent Degradation to Promote Glycolysis and TMZ Resistance in Glioblastoma

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
PLOD1 interacts with ENO1 and limits its FBXW7‐dependent ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation through a mechanism requiring PLOD1 catalytic activity. ENO1 stabilization sustains glycolysis, promoting glioblastoma cell proliferation, migration, and temozolomide resistance.

Extreme Weather Events and Consumer Food Responses

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates consumer food responses to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which affected a swath of the Southeastern U.S. in 2024. Using representative consumer survey data from six affected states, we analyze 10 distinct food responses classified into ex ante and ex post responses, and examine their associations with food insufficiency
