Gut Microbiome Dysbiosis is Associated With Human T‐Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 (HTLV‐1) Infection and Disease Progression to HTLV‐1‐Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesSmart Medicine, Volume 5, Issue 1, February 2026.
We provide the first comprehensive analysis of changes in the gut bacteriome at different clinical stages of HTLV‐1 infection. HTLV‐1 infection is associated with a dysbiosis that includes reduced bacterial diversity and an inverted Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio.

Intraocular Viral Communities Associated With Post-fever Retinitis

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2021
The virome of ocular fluids is naive. The results of this study highlight the virome in the vitreous fluid of the eye of individuals without any ocular infection and compare it with the virome of the vitreous fluid of individuals with retinitis.

Multiple Key Hosts and Network Structure Shape Viral Prevalence Across Multispecies Communities of Bees

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 29, Issue 2, February 2026.
This study develops a quantitative framework that integrates field data, epidemiological models, simulations, and Bayesian inference to identify key viral hosts in multispecies bee communities. By estimating species‐specific R0 values from flower‐visitor networks and viral screening, we show that honeybees, as well as other wild bees, can drive the ...

Diversity and Ecological Potentials of Marine Viruses Inhabiting Continental Shelf Seas

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 1, 5 January 2026.
To the best of the knowledge, this study provides the largest viral genome dataset from a continental shelf sea. It reveals that over half of vOTUs are novel, highlighting the remarkable viral novelty in the eastern continental shelf seas of China (ECSSC).

The microbiota–gut–brain axis in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease: a scoping review of human studies

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Alzheimer's disease (AD) is projected to become the highest‐burden neurological disorder globally. Mounting evidence implicates the gut microbiome in AD pathogenesis. This scoping review of gut microbiomes in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD included dietary and probiotic interventions.

The Revival of the Battle between David and Goliath in the Enteric Viruses and Microbiota Struggle: Potential Implication for Celiac Disease

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2019
The human gut is inhabited by overcrowded prokaryotic communities, a major component of which is the virome, comprised of viruses, bacteriophages, archaea, eukaryotes and bacteria.

A Roadmap to the Human Virome

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2013
Low-cost DNA sequencing has greatly democratized genomics, especially for the typically very small genomes of viruses [1]–[3]. The recent acceleration in human virus discovery by metagenomics indicates that many viruses escaped prior detection due to limitations of preexisting technologies.

A metagenomic catalog of the early-life human gut virome

open access: yesNature Communications
Early-life human gut microbiome is a pivotal driver of gut homeostasis and infant health. However, the viral component (known as “virome”) remains mostly unexplored.
