The tiny but elegant cephalopod called nautilus has a calcium carbonate spiral shell which develops day by day with the addition of a new growth line. For at least 500 million years, nautili have come up to the surface on the day of the full Moon to spawn, at which point they insert a partition or septum in the series of growth lines.
