Management of Humeral Shaft Fractures

Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2012
Humeral shaft fractures account for approximately 3% of all fractures. Nonsurgical management of humeral shaft fractures with functional bracing gained popularity in the 1970s, and this method is arguably the standard of care for these fractures. Still, surgical management is indicated in certain situations, including polytraumatic injuries, open ...

Distal Humeral Fractures in the Adult

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1986
Distal humeral fractures in the adult often are complicated by pseudarthrosis, pain, and limitation of motion. Of 29 adult patients with distal humeral fractures treated in teaching hospitals, 22 obtained acceptable results. Twenty-two percent of those treated by open methods and 36% of those treated by closed methods had unacceptable results.

Hemiarthroplasty for Humeral Head Fractures

European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, 2007
Replacement of the fractured humeral head with a modular prosthesis. The procedure aims at an adequate reconstruction of shape and function of the shoulder.Displaced three- and four-part fractures of the proximal humerus that cannot be reduced and internally fixed.Fracture can be reduced and adequately internally fixated.

Isolated Fracture of the Humeral Capitellum

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1981
Twenty-nine patients with fractures of the capitellum of the humerus were treated at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital during 15-year period; 17 were available for follow-up assessment. A classification based upon the specific nature of the fracture and the degree of trochlear involvement is a suggested guide to treatment and prognosis.

Plating of Proximal Humeral Fractures

Orthopedics, 2012
The optimal treatment for proximal humeral fractures is controversial. Few data exist concerning the influence of the surgical approach on the outcome. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of proximal humeral fractures treated with locking plate fixation through a deltopectoral vs an anterolateral deltoid ...

Fractures of the proximal humeral epiphysis

International Orthopaedics, 1993
Twenty-two patients with marked displacement of a fracture of the proximal humeral epiphysis have been treated with closed or open reduction and fixation by Kirschner wires. At an average follow-up of 6.8 years there have been good functional results in almost all patients (91.1), with better results in patients under 13 years of age particularly with ...

Management of Proximal Humeral Fractures

Journal of Hand Therapy, 1994
The understanding of early controlled range of motion adapted to the stability of the fracture is crucial in postfracture shoulder therapy. The diagnosis and management of proximal humeral fractures have been reviewed. In addition, the aspects of therapy and the pertinent rehabilitation protocols are outlined.

Epidemiologic Features of Humeral Fractures

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1982
Five hundred sixty-four Rochester, Minnesota, residents had a total of 586 humeral fractures during the period from 1965 to 1974. Of these, 47% involved the proximal humerus, and 20% the humeral shaft, and 33% the distal humerus. The incidence of humeral fractures associated with severe trauma was relatively higher among children and young adults, and ...

Humeral shaft fractures: a review

Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, 2011
Summary Humeral shaft fractures are common orthopaedicinjuries that can often be managed nonoperatively withhigh union rates and excellent results as the generaloutcome. Specific indications exist for operativemanagement and include polytrauma patients, openfractures, certain fracture patterns, and failure to main-tain an acceptable closed reduction ...

Distal Humeral Fractures in Adults

Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, 2011
Distal humeral fractures in adults are relatively uncommon injuries that require operative intervention in the majority of cases. Dual plate fixation, with placement of a separate strong plate on each column and orientation of the plates either at 90° or 180° to each other, is indicated for all adult fractures involving both columns of the distal part ...
