Correlation between Humorous Coping Style and Health

A significant correlation of −0.34 was found between scores on the Situational Humor Response Questionnaire and a measure of perceived physical health for 51 college students. Mean scores on the questionnaire were similar to those of the original standardization population.

The humor styles approach assumes that humor can be adaptive and maladaptive, with four main styles of humor reflecting how we use humor in every-day life: Affiliative, Self-enhancing, Self-defeating, and Aggressive. Through a series of studies, the adult HSQ was first adapted for children aged 11–16 years and then for younger children aged 8–11 years.

“Humor Style” and Understanding of Editorial Satire

Scores for 106 college students on a “Humor Style” scale were not related to the understanding of three editorial satires. Ratings of satires' funniness and interestingness tend to correlate, providing evidence of a general “satire appreciation” factor in college students. The items in the “Humor Style” scale seem to measure humor style.

Humor and shyness: The relation between humor styles and shyness

AbstractThe Shyness Scale and Humor Styles Questionnaire were given to 174 subjects (69 male, 105 female). There was a significant negative correlation between shyness and affiliative humor for the total group, which was explained by the inability of shy people to relax enough in social situations to use this kind of humor.
