Abstract Bryde's whales form a major coastal aggregation in the Beibu Gulf, China. Using 1 year of continuous island‐based seismic recordings from Xieyang Island, we established a large labeled data set of coastal Bryde's whale calls with more than 1.7 million samples.

Early Post‐Release Movement Convergence in Reintroduced Giant Pandas
We used high‐frequency GPS tracking of eight reintroduced giant pandas (474 tracking days) to test how extreme energetic constraints shape movement during early post‐release adjustment. Principal component analysis of ten daily movement metrics revealed two independent movement axes (exploration–exploitation and tortuosity–consistency), and an ...

Influence of Solvent Lipid Extraction on Tissue‐Specific Carbon Isotopes
To assess the impact of solvents on δ13C, we used a standard lipid extraction protocol on four different pure proteins and humpback whale blubber, a very lipid‐rich tissue. The results showed that the solvents did not have a significant effect on δ13C and δ15N of pure proteins as values largely remained within 0.5‰ of unextracted samples, which is ...

Estimating the mortality rate of humpback whale calves in the central North Pacific ocean.
Sighting histories of individually identified female humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in their winter and summer ranges were used to investigate mortality of North Pacific humpback whale calves. We compiled records collected between 1979 and 1995

Humpback whale genomes reflect the increased efficiency of commercial whaling
Genetic diversity is declining globally, a trend that may particularly affect exploited populations that must adapt to rapid environmental change and other threats. Estimated genomic changes in effective population size mirrored known whaling history and shifts in technology.

A predictable winter aggregation of dwarf minke whales occurs annually in the Great Barrier Reef, where interannual site fidelity has been documented in adults but not previously in calves. Comparison of all photographed calves from 2003 to 2023 with a long‐term photo‐identification catalogue revealed one individual resighted from calf to adulthood ...
