Co3O4/CeO2 and Co3O4/ZrO2 Composites as Heterogeneous Catalysts for Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Vanillyl Alcohol

open access: yesChemistryOpen, Volume 15, Issue 5, May 2026.
This work compares binary metal oxides of Co3O4/CeO2 and Co3O4/ZrO2 to elucidate the structure–activity relationship on the selective oxidation of vanillyl alcohol to vanillin, highlighting the Co3O4/CeO2 system that enables high efficiency and selectivity under mild, green reaction conditions.

Hemispheric dominance in HVC is experience-dependent in juvenile male zebra finches

open access: yesScientific Reports
Juvenile male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) must be exposed to an adult tutor during a sensitive period to develop normal adult song. The pre-motor nucleus HVC (acronym used as a proper name), plays a critical role in song learning and production ...

Extensive GJD2 Expression in the Song Motor Pathway Reveals the Extent of Electrical Synapses in the Songbird Brain

open access: yesBiology, 2021
Birdsong is a precisely timed animal behavior. The connectivity of song premotor neural networks has been proposed to underlie the temporal patterns of neuronal activity that control vocal muscle movements during singing.

Enzymatic Poly(gallic acid)‐grafted L‐Histidine Reduces Cell Inflammation and Oxidative Stress: In Silico and In Vitro Studies

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, Volume 23, Issue 4, April 2026.
Microwave‐assisted grafting yields a PGAL–His conjugate with enhanced binding through electrostatic and hydrogen‐bond interactions. The material modulates THP‐1 macrophage response, reducing ROS production, pro‐inflammatory cytokines (IL‐6, IL‐1β, TNF‐α), and cell adhesion.

Empowering Medical Students to Practice High-Value Care

open access: yesInternational Medical Education
Over the last decade, initiatives like the Choosing Wisely campaign have promoted the practice of evidence-based, cost-conscious care. However, education surrounding value in medicine has been largely restricted to graduate-level medical education or ...

The Smith Cloud: HI associated with the Sgr dwarf? [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The Smith high velocity cloud (V(LSR) = 98 kms) has been observed at two locations in the emission lines [OIII]5007, [NII]6548 and H-alpha. Both the [NII] and H-alpha profiles show bright cores due to the Reynolds layer, and red wings with emission ...

Using FoxP2 to Distinguish Direct and Indirect Basal Ganglia Pathways for Vocal Learning in Songbirds

open access: yesDevelopmental Neurobiology, Volume 86, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT The cortico‐basal ganglia pathways that mediate vocal learning in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) are localized in parallel circuits formed by CORE and SHELL subregions. These circuits traverse a specialized region of the basal ganglia essential for vocal learning (Area X), which includes intermixed striatal and pallidal neurons.

Origin of the unusually low nitrogen abundances in young populations of the Large Magellanic Cloud

open access: yes, 2010
It is a longstanding problem that HII regions and very young stellar populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have the nitrogen abundances ([N/H]) by a factor of ~7 lower than the solar value. We here discuss a new scenario in which the observed

Stable Propagation of a Burst Through a One-Dimensional Homogeneous Excitatory Chain Model of Songbird Nucleus HVC [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We demonstrate numerically that a brief burst consisting of two to six spikes can propagate in a stable manner through a one-dimensional homogeneous feedforward chain of non-bursting neurons with excitatory synaptic connections.

Multiterminal High‐Voltage Direct Current Projects: A Comprehensive Assessment and Future Prospects

open access: yesHigh Voltage, Volume 11, Issue 2, Page 317-344, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Multiterminal high‐voltage direct current (MT‐HVDC) systems are an important part of modern power systems, addressing the need for bulk power delivery and efficient renewable energy integration. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in MT‐HVDC technology, including launched projects and ongoing initiatives.
