Hybrid electric chemical propulsion

21st Joint Propulsion Conference, 1985
Abstract : A spacecraft propulsion concept that uses a combination of electrical energy and chemical energy for thrust is explored using thermodynamic modeling calculations. The essence of this concept consists of adding a carefully chosen amount of O2 or F2 oxidizer to the propellant flow of a conventional H2 electrothermal thruster.

Hybrid-Electric Propulsion for Aircraft

Journal of Aircraft, 2015
Against a background of increasing energy demand and rising fuel prices, hybrid-electric propulsion systems have the potential to significantly reduce fuel consumption in the aviation industry, particularly in the lighter sectors. By taking advantage of both electric motor and internal combustion engine, hybrid-electric propulsion systems provide not ...

Power Flow Optimization for a Hybrid-Electric Propulsion System

Volume 4: Cycle Innovations; Cycle Innovations: Energy Storage, 2022
Abstract The present study deals with the optimization of performance for a hybrid-electric propulsion system. It focuses on the modeling and power management frameworks, while evaluation is done on a single flight basis. The main objective is to extract the maximum out of the novel powertrain archetype.

Electric and Hybrid-Electric Propulsion Systems

2013
While in conventional ICE-based vehicles the energy carrier is a fossil fuel, electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems are characterized by the presence of an electrochemical or electrostatic energy storage system. Moreover, at least one electric motor is responsible — totally or partially — for the vehicle propulsion.

Design of a Hybrid Electrical Propulsion System

52nd AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference, 2011
The focus of this work is on exploring the design of an aircraft hybrid propulsion system by integrating a gas turbine engine with an electric motor assisted by solar power. We discuss how the two systems can work in tandem while optimizing the efficiency.

Hybrid electric propulsion system using submersed SPM machine

2008 18th International Conference on Electrical Machines, 2008
This paper deals with the design of a surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) motor operating in a propulsion system of a small ship. The SPM motor is installed in a submersed bulb provided of a propeller. The particular location of the motor together with the very high torque-to-volume ratio required by this application need an accurate coupled ...
