Responsible Innovation in Plant Breeding: The Case of Hybrid Potato Breeding

open access: yesPlants, 2023
As an emerging innovation, hybrid potato breeding raises high expectations about faster variety development and clean true potato seed as a new source of planting material. Hybrid breeding could, therefore, substantially contribute to global food security and other major sustainable development goals.

Comparative Transcriptomics Reveals Important Genes Underlying Heat-Tolerant Sterility in Photo-Thermo-Sensitive Male Sterile Wheat in Seed Production Environments

open access: yesBiomolecules
Maintaining stable male sterility is fundamental for ensuring the genetic purity and productivity of two-line hybrid wheat. However, unexpected heat events during the fertility-sensitive period can induce fertility restoration in photo-thermo-sensitive ...

Optimizing Wheat Planting Density by Adjusting Population Structure and Stabilizing Stem Strength to Achieve High and Stable Yields

open access: yesAgronomy
Increasing wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) planting density is the most effective production management method for increasing yields; however, excessive crop populations under high planting densities may experience elevated risk of stem lodging.

High-frequency synthetic apomixis by OsBBM1 shows environmentally sensitive inheritance instability in hybrid rice

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science
Synthetic apomixis allows for the fixation of heterosis in rice, eliminating the need for annual hybrid seed production. Recently, synthetic apomixis has been successfully implemented in rice, enabling stable clonal propagation through seeds via a ...

Genetic Gains in Pearl Millet in India: Insights Into Historic Breeding Strategies and Future Perspective

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2021
Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum R. Br.) is an important staple and nutritious food crop in the semiarid and arid ecologies of South Asia (SA) and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In view of climate change, depleting water resources, and widespread malnutrition,

Comparative transcriptomic analysis of the super hybrid rice Chaoyouqianhao under salt stress

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology, 2022
Background Soil salinization is a threat to food security. China is rich in saline land resources for potential and current utilization. The cultivation and promotion of salt-tolerant rice varieties can greatly improve the utilization of this saline land.

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.

Multi-Environment Genome-Wide Association Studies of Yield Traits in Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) × Tepary Bean (P. acutifolius A. Gray) Interspecific Advanced Lines in Humid and Dry Colombian Caribbean Subregions

open access: yesAgronomy, 2023
Assessing interspecific adaptive genetic variation across environmental gradients offers insight into the scale of habitat-dependent heritable heterotic effects, which may ultimately enable pre-breeding for abiotic stress tolerance and novel climates ...
