Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker Feasibility Study

IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology, 2017
Recently, a growing number of dc systems exist based on the development of electrical energy consumption. For low-voltage dc grids, switching devices are needed that have to meet technically sophisticated requirements. These devices have to handle fault currents of several hundred amperes and system voltages up to 1000 V.

A hybrid circuit breaker for DC-application

2015 IEEE First International Conference on DC Microgrids (ICDCM), 2015
The development of large scale DC microgrid and high voltage direct current (HVDC) power grid requires a reliable, fast and low-loss circuit breaker. In spite of the advantages of DC gird such as low loss and no reactive power, DC grid has major disadvantages concerning control and switch actions.

Modular Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker for Medium-Voltage DC System

2020 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2020
This paper proposes a new modular hybrid DC Circuit Breaker (DCCB) for Medium-Voltage DC (MVDC) grid system. The proposed DCCB has mechanical switch which is composed of Vacuum Interrupter (VI) and Permanent Magnetic Actuator (PMA). And commutation path which is composed of two IGBTs and diodes is connected to the VI in parallel.

Zero volt switching hybrid DC circuit breakers

Conference Record of the 2000 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. Thirty-Fifth IAS Annual Meeting and World Conference on Industrial Applications of Electrical Energy (Cat. No.00CH37129), 2002
DC distribution networks have the advantage of easy connection of generators of different frequency, fuel cells, and storage devices like batteries and flywheels to a grid and the advantage of a lower current load of the cables. Despite these advantages, often an AC distribution network is chosen because of the lack of reliable DC switchgear.

Multi-Port Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker for DC Distribution Network

2019 IEEE 8th International Conference on Advanced Power System Automation and Protection (APAP), 2019
The two-port hybrid DC circuit breaker (TP-HCB) combines the advantages of mechanical DC circuit breaker (DCCB) and solid-state DCCB, which has small loss during normal operation and fast action speed. However, the TP-HCB contains many IGBTs to withstand transient breaking voltage, therefore the total cost of TP-HCB is relatively high.

Parameter Designing of the DC Hybrid Circuit Breaker

2014 Fifth International Conference on Intelligent Systems Design and Engineering Applications, 2014
This paper introduces the parameter designing of the DC hybrid circuit breaker (CB). In the CB, the current limiting circuit is designed to inhibit the increasing of fault current, the combinatorial electronic power switch is designed to reduce the series connecting number of power electronic device.

Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker with Power Flow Control Function

2021 6th Asia Conference on Power and Electrical Engineering (ACPEE), 2021
The DC power grid will be an important part of power system with the development of DC load. The DC circuit breaker is the key equipment in DC grid, which can interrupt faulty current but it uses a large number of expensive power electronic components. Meanwhile the DC system needs power flow controller which also applies power electronic components to

Hybrid DC circuit breaker with fault current suppression capability

Journal of Power Electronics, 2021
Due to the rapid development of DC transmission, research on DC side fault protection has also made significant progress. The bipolar short-circuit fault is one of the most severe types of DC side faults. It can cause a current surge, which affects the safe operation of a system.

Arc-less commutation in hybrid DC circuit breaker

2016 IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS), 2016
DC circuit breaker (DCCB) has been intensively studied due to increasing demand in DC power transmission, such as mega solar power plants and large wind farms. A hybrid DC circuit breaker which consists of electrical contacts, semiconductor devices and a metal-oxide element (varistor) is a promising device to provide a small contact resistance and a ...

An Integrated Multi-port Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker

2019 IEEE 8th International Conference on Advanced Power System Automation and Protection (APAP), 2019
A massive number of hybrid DC circuit breakers (HCBs) have to be installed to protect a voltage source converter based multi-terminal DC (MTDC) system, leading to quite high costs. To reduce the implementation cost employing HCB in DC systems, this paper presents an integrated multi-port hybrid DC circuit breaker (IMP-HCB), which consists of an ...
