A genetic algorithm based approach to fiber design for high coherence and large bandwidth supercontinuum generation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We present a new approach to the design of optical microstructured fibers that have group velocity dispersion (GVD) and effective nonlinear coefficient (gamma ) tailored for supercontinuum (SC) generation.

Mechanical properties of oil well cement stone reinforced with hybrid fiber of calcium carbonate whisker and carbon fiber

open access: yesPetroleum Exploration and Development, 2015
To decrease the brittleness of oil well cement stone, the effects of carbon fiber, calcium carbonate whisker and hybrid fiber of them on mechanical prosperities of the cement stone were studied by experiments.

Movable Fiber-Integrated Hybrid Plasmonic Waveguide on Metal Film

open access: yes, 2011
A waveguide structure consisting of a tapered nanofiber on a metal film is proposed and analyzed to support highly localized hybrid plasmonic modes. The hybrid plasmonic mode can be efficiently excited through the in-line tapered fiber based on adiabatic

The Anisotropic Electrothermal Behavior and Deicing Performance of a Self-Healing Epoxy Composite Reinforced with Glass/Carbon Hybrid Fabrics

open access: yesMolecules
Hybrid fiber-reinforced polymer-laminated composites are often used under icy conditions (such as for reinforcing parts in aircraft frames and bridge beams), where there is an urgent demand for deicing.

H1 photonic crystal cavitites for hybrid quantum information protocols [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Hybrid quantum information protocols are based on local qubits, such as trapped atoms, NV centers, and quantum dots, coupled to photons. The coupling is achieved through optical cavities.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Hybrid Steel-Polyethylene Fiber-Reinforced Iron Ore Tailing Concrete: Mechanical, Sulfate Freeze–Thaw Resistance, and Microscopic Characteristics

open access: yesBuildings
This study examines the effects of iron ore tailing (IOT) replacement ratios and the hybridization of steel fiber (SF) and polyethylene (PE) fiber (PF) on the mechanical, sulfate freeze–thaw (F–T) resistance, and microscopic characteristics of IOT ...

Effects of intermodulation distortion on the performance of a hybrid radio/fiber system employing a self-pulsating laser diode transmitter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
A self-pulsating laser is used to generate a multicarrier (five radio frequency (RF) channels) microwave optical signal for use in a hybrid radio/fiber system. The self-pulsation is achieved by external light injection into the laser diode.

Modeling hepatic fibrosis in TP53 knockout iPSC‐derived human liver organoids

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study developed iPSC‐derived human liver organoids with TP53 gene knockout to model human liver fibrosis. These organoids showed elevated myofibroblast activation, early disease markers, and advanced fibrotic hallmarks. The use of profibrotic differentiation medium further amplified the fibrotic signature seen in the organoids.
