Thrust modulation in hybrid rocket engines
Journal of Propulsion and Power, 1988An experimental investigation of hybrid rocket engines (HRE) is performed to study the throttling performance within a thrust range of 10:1. In order to improve the throttling properties over the entire thrust range, the method of secondary gas injection (gasification) was used. The injection gases were reactive (O2) and inert (N2). High-pressure tests

Hybrid Gas Generator for a Staged Hybrid Rocket Engine
Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2017The two-stage combustion hybrid rocket engine with a hybrid gas generator method offers numerous advantages over a solid-propellant gas generator and classical hybrid rocket engines. These advantages include a higher specific impulse in operation, lower lifecycle costs, and lower sensitivity to combustion pressure.

Evaluation of Paraffin-based Fuels for Hybrid Rocket Engines
50th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference, 2014This paper summarizes the investigations on the combustion behavior of paraffin-based hybrid rocket fuels with gaseous oxygen (GOX) as oxidizer. Combined experimental activities have been done at the DLR Institute of Space Propulsion in Lampoldshausen and at the Space Propulsion Laboratory (SPLab) of Politecnico di Milano.

Optimal battery selection for hybrid rocket engine
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2022In the present paper, the optimal selection of batteries for an electric pump -fed hybrid rocket engine is analyzed. A two -stage Mars Ascent Vehicle, suitable for the Mars Sample Return Mission, is considered as test case. A single engine is employed in the second stage, whereas the first stage uses a cluster of two engines.

Secondary combustion in a staged hybrid rocket engine
Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2017The staged Hybrid rocket engine (HRE) is a relatively new concept that minimizes a loss of combustion performance with an oxidizer to fuel ratio shifting, while maintaining the key advantages of HREs. Knowing that a key component of the staged HRE is the secondary combustion, in this study a reacting flow Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based tool ...

Optimal Robust Design of Hybrid Rocket Engines
2016Hybrid rocket engines are flexible, safe, reliable, and low-cost and can be used in many aerospace applications. The engine design and operation are contingent on the type of designated mission and engine design is strictly related to trajectory optimization.
