Evaluation of Paraffin-based Fuels for Hybrid Rocket Engines

This paper summarizes the investigations on the combustion behavior of paraffin-based hybrid rocket fuels with gaseous oxygen (GOX) as oxidizer. Combined experimental activities have been done at the DLR Institute of Space Propulsion in Lampoldshausen and at the Space Propulsion Laboratory (SPLab) of Politecnico di Milano.

Testing 1kN Paraffin-Based Hybrid Rocket Engine

The present paper describes the design and testing activities carried out on a 1000 N hybrid rocket demonstrator, including a preliminary data assessment. Gaseous oxygen and a paraffin-based solid fuel represent the hybrid propellants. The demonstrator configuration and the design logic are presented first.

Numerical simulations of the flow in a GOX/HTPB hybrid rocket engine are carried out with a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes solver including detailed gas surface interaction mass and energy balances. Global mechanisms are considered for the gas-phase chemistry.
