Numerical Analyses of Thermal Protection Design in Hybrid Rocket Motors

AIAA Propulsion and Energy 2020 Forum, 2020
Hybrid rockets can provide a similar degree of flexibility in the thrust profile as a liquid engine but keeping a much simpler architecture. In addition to deal with only a single liquid propellant, hybrids are often designed with some sort of ablative protection system borrowed from the less flexible solid rockets instead of the more complex ...

Vortex combustion in a hybrid rocket motor

2016
The work is focused on a vortex flow pancake hybrid rocket motor (VFP). This hybrid rocket configuration is characterized by two flat solid fuel disks and a tangential injection between them. The gap between the two flat disks serves as combustion chamber.

Design Trade-offs for Hybrid Rocket Motors

48th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2012
A new method is developed for preliminary design of hybrid rocket motors. A cooperative evolutionary method is used with an indirect approach to perform the coupled optimization of hybrid rocket motor and trajectory for a sounding rocket. Different propellant combinations are considered for a sounding rocket application (microgravity platform).

Combustion Instability for Hybrid Rocket Motors with a Diaphragm

2019
A diaphragm has been used to enhance fuel regression rate and combustion efficiency in hybrid rockets. On the other hand, it has been observed that significant pressure oscillations occurred. In this paper, main factor on the excitation of the instability was studied.

Results of Labscale Hybrid Rocket Motor investigation

28th Joint Propulsion Conference and Exhibit, 1992
This work was performed to establish a labscale hybrid rocket motor test and evaluation capability at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. The scope included activation of a Labscale Hybrid Motor, determination of baseline burning rates for PMMA fuel, and replication of pressure oscillations for HTPB fuel. The 0.820-in.-diam port, 10-in.-long fuel grains

Simulations of Paraffin-Based Hybrid Rocket Motors and Comparison with Experiments

53rd AIAA/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference, 2017
A Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver is suitably set up to predict the flow field within paraffin-based hybrid rocket thrust chambers. The regression rate is modeled through a gas/surface interaction boundary condition based on wall mass and energy balances.

Regression rate studies of hybrid rocket fuel on a lab scale rocket motor

2015 International Conference on Robotics, Automation, Control and Embedded Systems (RACE), 2015
Hybrid rocket propulsion is attractive because of their potential features such as high specific impulse, stop-start capability, thrust modulation, mission abort and non-polluting characteristics. Various combustion models and hybrid combustion theories have been developed to understand the physics behind hybrid combustion.
