Publisher Summary As development activities in deeper waters increase, gas hydrates have become one of the top issues in the offshore industry. Gas hydrate problems manifest themselves most commonly during drilling and production processes. Hydrates may appear anywhere and at any time in an offshore system when there is natural gas, water, and ...

Hydrophobic Hydration and the Formation of a Clathrate Hydrate
Physical Review Letters, 1998We report a direct comparison of the local structure of the hydrophobic hydration of krypton in both the liquid and solid states by the extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy technique. The evolution of an ordered hydration shell of the nonpolar gas moiety is followed as the liquid to solid phase transition progresses. The formation of a

Existence of a hydrated electron as a byproduct of water radiolysis was established more than 50 years ago, yet this species continues to attract significant attention due to its role in radiation chemistry, including DNA damage, and because questions persist regarding its detailed structure.

Frozen protein and nucleic acid solutions at -35°C show relatively narrow (100 milligauss) proton nuclear magnetic resonance signals which are assignable to water that is sufficiently mobile to reduce the dipolar broadening normally associated with solids. Hydration was found to be 0.3 to 0.5 gram of water per gram of protein.

AbstractThe hydration of several polyacids has been investigated with special attention to the effects of neighboring charged groups and hydrophobic groups on the hydration regions. The molar volume change due to the structural change of water by the hydration was obtained by the method of refractivity measurement.

The hydration of phospholipids
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1974Abstract The adsorption isotherms of egg phosphatidylcholine, egg phosphatidylethanolamine and bovine phosphatidylserine, in both their lyso and diacyl forms, have been determined in an examination of the hydration characteristics of films of these phospholipids.

Publisher Summary The size and shape of virus nucleoprotein particles can be evaluated unambiguously only when the degree of hydration is known. This chapter discusses several methods that are available for the determination of the hydration of protein crystals.
