The Impact of Occupational Tasks on Firefighter Hydration During a Live Structural Fire [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Structural firefighting is a highly stressful occupation with firefighters performing intense bouts of physical activity in environmental extremes while wearing impermeable, heavy and restrictive personal protective equipment.

Tuning the Dielectric Properties of Individual Clay Nanosheets by Interlayer Composition: Toward Nano‐Electret Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The dielectric properties of clays are studied on the level of individual monolayers and functional double stacks. The material breakdown characteristics and charge storage performance are analyzed. For illustration, a defined charge pattern representing a cuneiform character is produced, written into a microscopic clay tile, referencing the origins of

Evaluation of Machine Learning Approaches for Hydration Heat Prediction in Energy-Efficient Cement Composites

open access: yesEnergies
Accurate prediction of the heat of hydration is essential for designing low-emission, durable mortars and concretes with controlled thermal behavior, as the partial replacement of Portland cement clinker with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs ...

Setting control of completely recyclable concrete with slag and aluminate cements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A completely recyclable concrete (CRC) is designed to have a chemical composition equivalent to the one of general raw materials for cement production. By doing so, this CRC can be used at the end of its service life in cement manufacturing without the ...

Fast‐Responding O2 Gas Sensor Based on Luminescent Europium Metal‐Organic Frameworks (MOF‐76)

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Luminescent MOF‐76 materials based on Eu(III) and mixed Eu(III)/Y(III) show rapid and reversible changes in emission intensity in response to O2 with very short response times. The effect is based on triplet quenching of the linker ligands that act as photosensitizers. Average emission lifetimes of a few milliseconds turn out to be mostly unaffected by

Glass transition in biomolecules and the liquid-liquid critical point of water

open access: yes, 2006
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the relation between the dynamic transitions of biomolecules (lysozyme and DNA) and the dynamic and thermodynamic properties of hydration water.

Thermoregulatory and cardiovascular responses to creatine, glycerol and alpha lipoic acid in trained cyclists [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background It has been shown that supplementation with creatine (Cr) and glycerol (Gly), when combined with glucose (Glu) necessary for the enhancement of Cr uptake by skeletal muscle, induces significant improvements in thermoregulatory and ...

Formation of Stable Amorphous Calcium Phosphate and Collagen Assemblies by a Versatile Spray‐Drying Approach

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) microparticles with long‐term and thermal stability are prepared with or without collagen using a scalable one‐pot spray‐drying process. Under simulated physiological conditions, they crystallize into biomimetic bone mineral and, when combined with collagen, form extrudable, fibrillar bone‐like 3D constructs.

Building Water Models, A Different Approach

open access: yes, 2014
Simplified, classical models of water are an integral part of atomistic molecular simulations, especially in biology and chemistry where hydration effects are critical.
