Fracture and pore structure dynamic evolution of coals during hydraulic fracturing
, 2020Hydraulic fracturing is an effective method for producing coalbed methane. To better understand the evolution of the fracture and pore structure of coals that contain macro-fractures during hydraulic fracturing, we have performed a series of in-situ ...

Variational Principles for Hydraulic Fracturing
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1992A new application of an energy rate variational principle for hydraulic fracturing processes is introduced. The formation structural, fracture mechanics, and fracture fluid flow responses are integrally coupled in this treatment. This unified principle, with various specialized forms, provides a formal framework for the study of continuum as well as ...

Propagation and characterization of the micro cracks induced by hydraulic fracturing in shale
, 2020Hydraulic fracturing is commonly used for the exploitation of shale gas. However, the mechanism of permeability increase after the fracturing has still remained unclear so far.

Hydraulic-Fracture Propagation in a Naturally Fractured Reservoir
SPE Production & Operations, 2010Summary We present the results of numerical modeling that quantify the physical mechanisms of mechanical activation of a natural fault because of contact with a pressurized hydraulic fracture (HF). We focus on three stages of interactions: HF approaching, contact, and subsequent infiltration of the fault.

Fracture toughness and hydraulic fracturing
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1989Abstract A study of the influence of fracture toughness on the shape of a hydraulically induced fracture is presented. Three-dimensional numerical simulations of fracture propagation show that fracture toughness is not the main controlling parameter if one chooses fracture toughness values determined at ambient conditions.

Fracture network engineering for hydraulic fracturing
The Leading Edge, 2011Fracture network engineering (FNE) involves the design, analysis, modeling, and monitoring of infield activities aimed at enhancing or minimizing rock mass disturbance. FNE relies specifically on advanced techniques to model fractured rock masses and correlate microseismic (MS) field observations with simulated microseismicity generated from these ...
