Potential biomethane productivity in the temperature phased anaerobic digestion process: Impact of organic load rate and solid retention time of acidogenic phase

open access: yesChemical Engineering Journal Advances
This study evaluated the biochemical methanogenic potential (BMP) of effluents from a thermophilic acidogenic anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AMBR) operated semi-continuously at different hydraulic retention times (HRT) and solids retention times (SRT ...

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Bio‐Inspired Artificial Ionic Mechanoreceptor

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A skin‐inspired artificial mechanoreceptor based on ionic interactions is presented for biomimetic tactile sensing. Pressure‐driven ionic redistribution within microfluidic channels generates a self‐powered electrical signal without external bias. The generated waveform exhibits mechanoreceptor‐like temporal features, including overshoot and undershoot,

Upcycling Keratin‐Based Textile Waste Into High‐Performance Hybrid Fibers Via Tuning the Interfacial Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Keratin recovered from animal‐hair textile waste is fractionated and blended with cellulose to produce continuously spun hybrid fibers. Selecting the high‐molecular‐weight keratin fraction enables 30 wt.% keratin incorporation while maintaining high strength in dry and wet states.
