Generation and Migration of Light Hydrocarbons
Science, 1984Light hydrocarbons (containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms) are formed from disseminated organic matter in sediments at the parts-per-billion level by biological and low-temperature (< 50°C) chemical reactions and at the parts-permillion level by high-temperature (> 50°C) cracking reactions. The cooler reactions produce mainly branched

Hydrocarbon Retention and the Case for Vertical Migration
SPE Eastern Europe Subsurface Conference, 2021Abstract Complex hydrocarbon charging and distribution in which reservoirs are filled by oil and gas phases with different densities and genetic types inter-fingering within the basin, are common phenomena, and often attributed to vertical migration.

A dynamic theory of hydrocarbon migration
Mathematical Geology, 1992This paper presents a new analysis of secondary migration of hydrocarbon that does not require capillary forces for trapping, but instead uses the method of characteristics and wave theory. The waves change speed and either reflect or refract (or partially reflect and partially refract) as they contact with layers of different flow capacities ...

Estimating degree of hydrocarbon migration
International Geology Review, 1980By collating the results of numerous analyses of the petroleum gas of the formation oil of various Soviet fields, and those of laboratory investigations, a nomogram quantitatively reflecting the phenomena of vertical and horizontal migration oil was compiled.

Hydrocarbon Fluorescence and Migration of Petroleum
AAPG Bulletin, 1962ABSTRACT Under ultraviolet radiation all crude oils exhibit fluoresence which varies in intensity and hue. During analysis of fluorescence emission spectra of 105 Colorado, Wyoming, and Alberta, Canada, crude oils, and 10 organic matter extracts, six prominent peaks of fluorescence were identified at 4440Å, 4520Å, 4720Å, 4830Å, 5780Å,

Migration of Hydrocarbons in Compacting Basins
AAPG Bulletin, 1978ABSTRACT In the migration of petroleum, either as phases separate from water or in water solution, an important role is assigned to pore fluid movements which result from the compaction process. The usual view is that progressive burial of the sediments results in their compaction with consequent expulsion of pore fluids. These fluids

Revealing hydrocarbon migration pathways
Geologische Rundschau, 1989In this paper a general concept for revealing hydrocarbon migration pathways in rock sequences is introduced. The concept uses a multidisciplinary approach based on a geochemical and a petrophysical (or mineralogical) index. These two indices provide together the migration plot which shows the direction of hydrocarbon movement.

Primary migration by bulk hydrocarbon flow
Organic Geochemistry, 1990Abstract A laboratory program was undertaken to investigate hydrocarbon transport through source rocks and to identify dominant processes so that the appropriate physics and chemistry could be used in models to predict expulsion timing and efficiency.

The role of faults in hydrocarbon migration
Petroleum Geoscience, 1998It is well known that the hydrodynamic behaviour of faults may be rather different from that of their surrounding beds. These characteristics may not be constant through time for a single fault and especially change during rupture events. Various numerical tests were performed using the TEMISPACK software to calculate the quantity of hydrocarbons that ...

Hydrocarbon migration in the Solway Basin
Geological Journal, 1995AbstractCarboniferous rocks in the north Solway onshore outcrop show evidence of hydrocarbon migration. Oil residues occur as intergranular bitumen in sandstones, thoriferous bitumen nodules in sandstones and uraniferous bitumens in fractures associated with the North Solway Fault at the northern margin of the Solway Basin.
