Concentrated Solar Combined With Hydrothermal Treatment to Unlock Lignin Graphitization Mechanisms

open access: yesGlobal Challenges, Volume 10, Issue 7, July 2026.
Advanced carbon materials such as graphitic biocarbons are successfully obtained from kraft lignin. A sustainable production route is highlighted using a combination of hydrothermal carbonization and solar carbonization, leading to the production of long and well‐stacked graphene layers in the biocarbon.

Hydrothermal Carbonization of Peat Moss and Herbaceous Biomass (Miscanthus): A Potential Route for Bioenergy

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
Peat moss and miscanthus were hydrothermally carbonized (HTC) either individually or co-processed in a different ratio to produce hydrochar. The hydrochar and pelletized hydrochar were then characterized to determine if hydrochar can be used as an ...

Decarbonizing Food Processing Waste: Integrated Chemometric Modeling of Hydrochar Fuel Properties From Sunflower Seed Husks

open access: yesJournal of Food Process Engineering, Volume 49, Issue 7, July 2026.
In this study, an integrated approach linking hydrothermal carbonization process (HTC) process parameters with structural and physicochemical characteristics via advanced multivariate statistical methods was presented. FTIR‐derived information was integrated with proximate analysis features, and principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least ...

A novel intelligent system based on machine learning for hydrochar multi-target prediction from the hydrothermal carbonization of biomass

open access: yesBiochar
Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a thermochemical conversion technology to produce hydrochar from wet biomass without drying, but it is time-consuming and expensive to experimentally determine the optimal HTC operational conditions of specific biomass

Toward the Utilization of Char from the Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Polyethylene Plastic Waste: Studies of the Adsorption of Rhodamine B in an Aqueous Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, Volume 10, Issue 6, June 2026.
Hydrothermal liquefaction of waste polyethylene produces char that effectively removes rhodamine B from water. Nearly complete dye adsorption is achieved under optimum conditions, with adsorption following Langmuir isotherm and pseudo‐first‐order kinetics.

Hydrochar decreased the enantioselective bioaccumulation of prothioconazole-desthio in the tobacco through rhizosphere soil metabolic regulation

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
Pollution of soil environments by pesticides is a serious global issue. Char amendments (pyrochar and hydrochar) have been widely used to remediate contaminated soils. However, the rhizosphere soil metabolic mechanisms underlying the hydrochar remediated

Sustainable Flame Retardant System with Thermomechanically Modified Stinging Nettle Tailored for Polyamide 12

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 311, Issue 6, June 2026.
A sustainable flame retardant system for polyamide 12 is developed by combining melamine polyphosphate with thermomechanically modified stinging nettle. The plant‐derived component alters degradation pathways, enhances char formation, and reduces heat release.

Waste‐Derived Functional Carbon for Rapid PAHs Removal: A Sustainable Pathway for Co‐Remediation and Resource Valorization of Oily Sludge

open access: yesSusMat, Volume 6, Issue 3, June 2026.
Oily sludge is converted into co‐pyrolytic carbon (CPC) through co‐pyrolysis with biomass and further functionalized with APTES to form APTES/CPC. The modified carbon enables rapid anthracene removal from petroleum‐contaminated wastewater, achieving most adsorption within 1 min and reaching equilibrium within 10 min. The enhanced adsorption performance
