Degradation of hydrochlorothiazide in water

The photolytic decomposition of hydrochlorothiazide in water was investigated. Irradiation of the drug was performed in pure water and sewage treatment plant water with a solar simulator and by direct sunlight. Here we show that three photoproducts were obtained. Two of them were formed in yields much higher than 10%.

ABSTRACTA case of photosensitivity induced by only 2 tablets of hydrochlorothiazide (Behyd‐RA tablets) is reported. The patient had sunburn‐like eruptions on the face, neck, arms and hands. The histologic picture was the same as in polymorphic light eruption.

Twenty-four patients with mild to moderate hypertension were treated for up to 60 weeks with hydrochlorothiazide and either placebo, timolol, or timolol and amiloride. The effect of adding timolol and amiloride to hydrochlorothiazide was evaluated in a double blind trial.

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) has not been shown to reduce mortality or cardiovascular events when given as a single agent. In fact, HCTZ increased cardiovascular death and coronary artery disease (CAD) compared to placebo and usual care in 2 randomized trials, yet it is the most prescribed diuretic in the United States (U.S.).
