Genetic chronicle of the capybara: the complete mitochondrial genome of Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris

open access: yesMammalian Biology, 2023
Abstract A brazilian digital influencer has kept a capybara (named Filó) in captivity, using her in his videos, which is against the law in Brazil. Because of this, she was confiscated by professionals from the IBAMA (Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources).

Humans are not unique: difficult birth is common in placental mammals

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Human childbirth is widely presumed to be uniquely difficult and dangerous compared to birth in other mammals. Tight fetopelvic proportions can result in obstructed labour and contribute to high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. Ideas summarised under the ‘obstetrical dilemma’ have contributed to this assumption by explaining difficult

Integrated tick control on a farm with the presence of capybaras in a Brazilian spotted fever endemic region

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária, 2019
Ticks of the Amblyomma cajennense complex present high infestation rates. These ticks transmit the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, which causes Brazilian Spotted Fever.

Fire‐induced shifts in activity patterns of predators and prey in the Brazilian Pantanal

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Using camera trap data, we observed that 5 of 6 prey species showed statistically significant changes in temporal activity patterns, while jaguars were the only predator species to adjust activity when comparing pre‐fire and post‐fire periods in an isolated rocky formation in the Pantanal region.

Long‐term changes in functional diversity and its implications for mammalian conservation and ecological restoration in a grassland ecosystem

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Paleontological data provide information on natural environments prior to human influence, which are useful for tracking changes in ecosystem functioning through time. During the Late Pleistocene, about 10% of terrestrial mammalian species were extinct in South America.

Body Size Regulates Niche Overlap Asymmetry in the Subtropical Andes Rain Shadow: Isotopic Paleoecology of Oligocene South American Ungulates

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This study provides the first isotopic analysis of Oligocene mammals from Quebrada Fiera, Mendoza, Argentina, filling a major gap in South American paleontology. It reveals a latitudinal gradient in aridity due to the Andean rain shadow and highlights the role of (semi)permanent water bodies in sustaining diverse herbivore communities. Additionally, it
