The Hydrogen Bond

Inference: International Review of Science, 2015
The claim that chemistry has been explained in terms of quantum theory is received wisdom. Yet quantum physics is unable to explain the strong association of water molecules in liquid or ice. Marc Henry suggests the hydrogen bond is an emergent property of matter resulting from a non-linear coupling between quantified energy levels of water molecules ...

Hydrogen-bond filtration

Nature Reviews Chemistry, 2020
Self-organization of water molecules around solute ions can affect how they permeate through nanoporous liquid-crystalline membranes.

Hydrogen bonding in sulfonamides

Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2001
The hydrogen-bond connectivity in 39 sulfonamide crystal structures has been deciphered and described using graph set notation. The hydrogen-bond connectivity observed is used to gain information on hydrogen-bond preferences of specific donor and acceptor atoms of related sulfonamide molecules.

A twist-bend nematic phase driven by hydrogen bonding.

Angewandte Chemie, 2014
The liquid crystalline phase behavior of 4-[6-(4'-cyanobiphenyl-4-yl)hexyloxy]benzoic acid (CB6OBA) and 4-[5-(4'-cyanobiphenyl-4-yloxy)pentyloxy]benzoic acid (CBO5OBA) is described.

Mechanical tunability via hydrogen bonding in metal-organic frameworks with the perovskite architecture.

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2014
Two analogous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the perovskite architecture, [C(NH2)3][Mn(HCOO)3] (1) and [(CH2)3NH2][Mn(HCOO)3] (2), exhibit significantly different mechanical properties. The marked difference is attributed to their distinct modes of

Hydrogen Bond Detection

The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2006
In this Article we extend the idea of detecting a hydrogen bond solely on one single quantum chemically determined descriptor. We present an improvement of the method introduced by Reiher et al. (Theor. Chim. Acta 2001, 106, 379), who mapped the strength of the hydrogen bond onto an easily accessible quantity, namely, the two-center shared-electron ...

Hydrogen-Bonded Dihydrotetraazapentacenes

Organic Letters, 2012
Three new members of N-heteropentacenes explored herein have adjacent pyrazine and dihydropyrazine rings at one end of the pentacene backbone. Interesting findings from this study include self-complementary N-H···N H-bonds in the solid state, solvent-dependent UV-vis absorption caused by H-bonding, and new p-type organic semiconductors with field ...

The Influence of Hydrogen Bonding Side-Groups on Viscoelastic Behavior of Linear and Network Polymers

, 2014
Polymers containing hydrogen-bonding side groups (HBGs) can form transient supramolecular networks that exhibit technologically useful viscoelastic properties. Here, we investigate how dynamic behavior of functional poly(n-butyl acrylate) melts and cross-

Adsorption of bisphenol A based on synergy between hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction.

Langmuir, 2014
The study mainly investigated the synergetic adsorption of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction. To simplify the adsorption driving forces and binding sites, the hydrophilic and hydrophobic microdomain was introduced onto polypropylene (PP ...

The hydrogen bond

Reports on Progress in Physics, 1952
A survey is given of the infra-red spectra of substances possessing hydroxyl groups and of the position of the O-H valence vibration in the solid, liquid and gaseous state and in dilute solutions. The spectra of water, alcohols and carboxylic acids are discussed separately; and evidence for molecular association is adduced from the experiments on ...
