Influence of the Electromagnetic Field Model on the Calculated No‐Load Magnetic Field of Tubular Hydro Generators

open access: yesIET Electric Power Applications, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
This study investigated the influence of the selected electromagnetic field model on the calculation of the no‐load magnetic field of a tubular hydro generator. Straight and skewed stator slots were considered for the structure of the hydro generator. Three models were considered: the transient motion electromagnetic field‐circuit coupling model, the ...

Practical Aspects Concerning the Digital Implementation of Complex Protection Functions for Hydrogenerators [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 2014
This paper shows how to implement several complex protection functions for synchronous hydrogenerators using PC-05/104 digital equipment. PC-05/104 also performs the monitoring and visualization of the voltages and currents rms values and phase shifts ...

Influence of winding layout and airgap length on radial forces in large synchronous hydrogenerators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper investigates the flux density and radial force spatial harmonics in large salient pole synchronous hydro-generators. Vibration due to magnetic forces are mainly caused by low order harmonics in the airgap flux density distribution.

A Passive Islanding Method to Improve the Stability of Power Supply to Critical Loads in a Real Distribution Network

open access: yesInternational Transactions on Electrical Energy Systems, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
This study proposed a modified passive islanding technique that combines over/under frequency (OUF), rate of change of frequency (ROCOF), rate of change of phase angle difference (ROCPAD), and rate of change of voltage (ROCOV) for sensing of islanding and nonislanding conditions.

A Novel Cooling Technique to Improve the Thermal Characteristics of a Permanent Magnet Generator Using an Earth–Air Heat Exchanger

open access: yesJournal of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
In the current study, a novel cooling technique has been developed to enhance the thermal characteristics of a permanent magnet generator (PMG) by integrating with an earth–air heat exchanger (EAHE). The paper introduces a comprehensive thermal model of PMG, calculating thermal resistances based on the dimensions of a chosen 500‐kW PMG as a case study.

3D eddy current and temperature field analysis of large hydro-generators in leading phase operations

open access: yesCES Transactions on Electrical Machines and Systems, 2019
As a common practice, a large hydro-generator will operate in leading phase conditions to absorb the reactive power of the power grid. However, the accurate and precise prediction of the leading phase operation capacity of a large hydro-generator has ...

Use of Data-Driven Approaches for Defect Classification in Stator Winding Insulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Partial discharges (PD) in the high voltage insulation systems are both a symptom and cause of terminal and impending failures. The use of data-driven methods based on PD measurements will enable predictive strategies to replace traditional maintenance ...
