Transfer cells in Horneophyton lignieri illuminate the origin of vascular tissues in land plants
Summary Recent fossil discoveries and advances in plant phylogeny have renewed debate about the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of land plants and the evolution of its fundamental organs and tissues. We re‐investigate the vascular system of Horneophyton lignieri, an exceptionally preserved Rhynie Chert fossil central to understanding early plant ...

Leaf size in mosses is structurally constrained by cell dimensions and genome size
Cell size and midribs are the main mechanical determinants of moss leaf size, which itself depends on growth form and genome size; together, these relationships underpin key aspects of moss ecology and performance. Abstract Leaf anatomy is a key factor determining plant ecology.

The taxonomic status of the genus Stylactaria Stechow, 1921 (Hydroidomedusae, Anthomedusae, Hydractiniidae), with the description of a new species [PDF]
The status of all the species ascribed in the literature to Stylactaria is discussed, that nominal genus is considered a congener of Hydractinia and a new species (Hydractinia calderi n. sp.) is described. The medusae of the medusa-based genera Hansiella

Abstract Invasive species alter habitats and biological communities. The giant river prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man 1879) was introduced to Brazil for aquaculture, and invasive populations have established in the Amazon Delta region where they are believed to pose a risk to the native aquatic fauna.

Seasonal variations of the vagile fauna associated with Ectopleura crocea (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) in El Rompido marina (Huelva) [PDF]
El desarrollo urbano en las zonas costeras se ha visto incrementado notablemente en los últimos años, resultando en un mayor número de estructuras artificiales en los ambientes marinos. Diversos organismos han sido capaces de colonizar las superficies

Underwater Imagery Reveals Bryozoan Habitat in Western Port, South‐East Australia
Bryozoan habitats throughout the world and in Australia are rare, unique and fragile ecosystems at risk of anthropogenic disturbance. Here we describe new bryozoan habitats in Western Port, an Australian RAMSAR site near Melbourne, which do not feature in previous ecological descriptions and current habitat mapping available for the region.

Rapidly changing climatic conditions combined with increasing shipping traffic is going to accelerate the introduction and persistence of marine invasive species in Arctic Canada. To address this emerging threat, we propose seawater environmental DNA metabarcoding on board ships of opportunity (i.e., cruise ships) as a cost‐effective method for ...
