Influence of Drain and Operational Parameters on Backwash Cleaning Efficiency in a Commercial Sand Filter Model

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Some studies have demonstrated the influence of the drainage system design on the hydraulic behaviour and on the expansion of the filter bed during the backwashing process, with a presumed effect on removal efficiency. The objective was to evaluate the influence of the drainage system design of a commercial sand filter model, the operating ...

Bias Correction of ERA5 Temperature Across Five Topoclimatic Clusters: A Comparative Evaluation of Four Methods

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
ERA5 near‐surface temperature over South America exhibits systematic cold biases in daily maximum temperature and warm biases in daily minimum temperature. To address the continent's strong climatic and topographic heterogeneity, South America was partitioned into five topoclimatic clusters, and four bias‐correction approaches were evaluated. The Multi‐

Spatiotemporal Changes and Climate Driving Factors of Compound Precipitation‐Temperature Extreme Events Across Global Land Areas

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
During the period 1901–2024, the dominant proportion of compound dry‐warm extremes in annual, June–July–August (JJA), and December–January–February (DJF) occurrences was the highest among the four types of compound precipitation and temperature extremes across global land areas, accounting for 40.1%, 50.3%, and 28.0%, respectively.

Water, Water Everywhere: The Hydrologic Cycle

open access: yes, 2008
This program studies the hydrologic cycle and water's chemical and physical abilities to dissolve and transport minerals, nutrients, and toxins. Alarming inadequacies in sewage treatment methods and dangerous environmental problems involving water ...

Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Extreme Hourly Rainfall in the Hawaiian Islands

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
The extreme rainfall trends in Hawaiʻi were revealed by hourly rainfall data: Across islands, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi Island had larger events at a return period. Annual maximum series of 15 gauges showed significant positive trends. While extreme rainfall trends show increases or decreases regionally, the trends varied with rainfall duration.

A Zonal‐Meridional Projection Method for Quantifying Global Land‐Ocean Moisture Transport

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
We present a physically consistent and computationally efficient method to quantify global coastal moisture transport by projecting vertically integrated moisture flux onto signed land–ocean boundary segments. The signed projection naturally distinguishes ocean‐to‐land inflow and land‐to‐ocean outflow without explicit directional classification ...

Low‐Intensity Precipitation Dominates Peninsular Spain (1961–2022)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Spatial analysis across Spain shows a shift in precipitation regimes (1961–2022) toward more frequent low‐intensity precipitation and reduced high‐intensity events, with localised increases in heavy precipitation along some coastal areas. This redistribution—captured through changes in precipitation frequency (RF) and volumetric contribution (RC ...
