Energy flow rate equation for river networks

open access: yesWater Science and Engineering
Rational allocation of water flow energy in river networks is essential to addressing water-related issues in river network areas. However, current methods of calculating the spatiotemporal distribution of flow energy in river networks lack precision and

Detecting change in precipitation indices using observed (1977–2016) and modeled future climate data in Portland, Oregon, USA

open access: yesJournal of Water and Climate Change, 2021
This study addresses how regional changes to precipitation may be identified by exploring the effect of temporal resolution on trend detection. Climate indices that summarize precipitation characteristics are used with Mann–Kendall monotonic testing to ...

Hydrologic Simulations of the Maquoketa River Watershed Using SWAT Working Paper 09-WP 49,June 2009 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This paper describes the application of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model to the Maquoketa River watershed, located in northeast Iowa. The inputs to the model were obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency’s geographic information/

Food insecurity and unemployment among immigrants in the United States

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Immigrants can be more vulnerable to economic downturns and, during periods of economic hardship, more likely to experience food insecurity compared to natives. This study examines the differential effect of the unemployment rate on the probability of being food insecure among diverse groups of immigrant households relative to natives in the ...

Controls on Deuterium Excess across Asia

open access: yesGeosciences, 2018
Deuterium excess (d-excess) is a second-order stable isotope parameter measured in meteoric water to understand both the source of precipitation and the evolution of moisture during transport.

Distortions of the Rain Distribution With Warming, With and Without Self‐Aggregation

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2021
We investigate how mesoscale circulations associated with convective aggregation can modulate the sensitivity of the hydrologic cycle to warming. We quantify changes in the full distribution of rain across radiative‐convective equilibrium states in a ...

The Herfindahl neutral point: A firm‐level threshold for managing market concentration with evidence from US hog packing

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper derives a firm‐level threshold, the Herfindahl Neutral Point, from the standard concentration index used in merger review. At this threshold, a marginal expansion leaves the index unchanged. Firms below the threshold reduce concentration when they expand; firms above it increase concentration.

Entropy production by evapotranspiration and its geographic variation

open access: yesSoil and Water Research, 2008
The hydrologic cycle is a system far from thermodynamic equilibrium that is characterized by its rate of entropy production in the climatological mean steady state.

The role of venture‐financed startups in innovation for US agriculture

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract To evaluate the role played by startup companies in the innovation ecosystem of US agriculture, we compile a unique dataset of 6024 new entrants founded 1987–2019 that details their financing lifecycles, annual economic performance, and patenting activities.

Hydrodynamic Characteristics of the Mainstem–Tributary Confluence in a Thermally Stratified Reservoir and the Effects of Selective Withdrawal

open access: yesWater Resources Research
Hydrodynamics characteristics in the mainstem–tributary confluence profoundly affect the local environment and ecology. Thermal stratification widely occurs in large reservoirs, and the need to investigate hydrodynamics of mainstem–tributary confluences ...
