This paper describes the Met Office's new lightning location system LEELA. A brief overview of the upgraded hardware and geolocation algorithms is given. LEELA has improved lightning detection capabilities, especially at night. When comparing LEELA to the previous ATDnet system against ground truths LEELA has 100% storm detection efficiency within 5 km

Using WSR-88D Polarimetric Data to Identify Bird-Contaminated Doppler Velocities
As an important part of Doppler velocity data quality control for radar data assimilation and other quantitative applications, an automated technique is developed to identify and remove contaminated velocities by birds, especially migrating birds.

Rare Lightning and Convection Characteristics During Two Successive Tornadoes in Southern China
ABSTRACT Systematic investigations into lightning characteristics of tornado storms in China remain scarce. This study comprehensively analyses rare lightning behaviour and overshooting top characteristics for two successive tornadoes during a long‐lived supercell in southern China on 27 April 2024.

Hailstorm Events Over a Maritime Tropical Region: Environmental Influences on Microphysics
Abstract Building on a previous study showing that NetCAPE0C—formulated as CAPE calculated up to the 0° ${}^{\circ}$C isotherm, after subtracting CIN and correcting for water loading—is effective in predicting hail occurrence in maritime tropical (mT) environments, we examined the microphysics to understand why, particularly for ordinary pulse storms ...

Improving the Interpretability of Classification Rules Discovered by an Ant Colony Algorithm: Extended Results [PDF]
The vast majority of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithms for inducing classification rules use an ACO-based procedure to create a rule in an one-at-a-time fashion. An improved search strategy has been proposed in the cAnt-MinerPB algorithm, where an

Hydrometeor classification from polarimetric radar measurements: a clustering approach [PDF]
A data-driven approach to the classification of hydrometeors from measurements collected with polarimetric weather radars is proposed. In a first step, the optimal number of hydrometeor classes (nopt) that can be reliably identified from a large set of ...

Abstract Low‐level clouds in the tropical cyclone (TC) rainbands modulate the radial inflow of warm, moist boundary layer air, which can impact TC intensity. Yet, precisely measuring rainband cloud boundaries with existing remote sensing techniques remains a challenge.

Unraveling hydrometeor mixtures in polarimetric radar measurements [PDF]
. Radar-based hydrometeor classification typically comes down to determining the dominant type of hydrometeor populating a radar sampling volume. In this paper we address the subsequent problem of inferring the secondary hydrometeor types present in a ...

Dust and Primary Biological Aerosol Particles (PBAP) Effects on Sea Breeze Systems Over Houston
Abstract Sea‐breeze‐induced convection plays a critical role in coastal weather but remains challenging to simulate due to complex aerosol–cloud interactions. Although mineral dust and primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) are known to act as cloud condensation nuclei and ice nucleating particles, their impacts on different convective cloud ...

Web page classification with an ant colony algorithm [PDF]
This paper utilizes Ant-Miner - the first Ant Colony algorithm for discovering classification rules - in the field of web content mining, and shows that it is more effective than C5.0 in two sets of BBC and Yahoo web pages used in our experiments.
