Dynamic wetting and heat transfer during droplet impact on heated bi-phobic wettability-patterned surfaces

open access: yes, 2020
This paper reports the dynamic wetting behavior and heat transfer characteristics for impinging droplets on heated bi-phobic surfaces (superhydrophobic matrix with hydrophobic spots).

YlmG1 is localized exclusively to the chloroplast envelope membrane and is involved in preprotein translocation in Arabidopsis thaliana

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cytosolically synthesized chloroplast preproteins are translocated across the outer and inner envelope membranes through translocons called TOC and TIC, respectively. In green algae and plants, the TIC core is composed of essential membrane proteins, Tic12, Tic20, and Tic214.

Application of hydrophobic fluorinated silicon oxide nanoparticle coating on electrodynamic screen (EDS) films for enhancing self-cleaning function of solar collectors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Optical surfaces, which are exposed to outdoor environmental conditions, are susceptible to dust deposition. Sunlight incident on the surface of photovoltaic (PV) modules is attenuated by the dust layer accumulation on the front surface of the modules ...

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Picosecond laser machined designed patterns with anti-ice effect [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Micromachining using ultra short laser pulses (USLP) has evolved over the past years as a versatile tool for introducing functional features in surfaces at a micrometric and even at a sub wavelength scale.

Model of a fluid at small and large length scales and the hydrophobic effect

open access: yes, 2001
We present a statistical field theory to describe large length scale effects induced by solutes in a cold and otherwise placid liquid. The theory divides space into a cubic grid of cells.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Effects of Additional Mesopores and the Surface Modification of the Y-Type Zeolite on the Alkane Oxidation Activity of Iron Complex-Encapsulated Catalysts

open access: yesMolecules
Catalytic alkane hydroxylation activities of the iron complex encapsulated into the micropore of the Y-type zeolite and mesoporous zeolites, the latter of which were obtained by the partial removal of aluminum and alkaline treatment, have been explored ...
