Super-Hydrophobic Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Coatings for Stainless Steel
We have taken advantage of the native surface roughness and the iron content of AISI 316 stainless steel to direct grow multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) random networks by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at low-temperature ($< 1000^{\circ}$C ...

Hydrophobic Treatment of Blended Fabric’s Surface
The nature-inspired theory of hydrophobic surface is an interdisciplinary subject which involves physics, chemistry, material science, and even biology. Nowadays with more developed equipment, we are able to fabricate man-made hydrophobic surfaces which ...

Driving Droplet by Scale Effect on Microstructured Hydrophobic Surfaces
A new type of water droplet transportation on microstructured hydrophobic surface is proposed and investigated experimentally and theoretically - water droplet could be driven by scale effect which is different from the traditional methods.

The Hydrophobic Effects: Our Current Understanding
Hydrophobic interactions are involved in and believed to be the fundamental driving force of many chemical and biological phenomena in aqueous environments. This review focuses on our current understanding on hydrophobic effects. As a solute is embedded into water, the interface appears between solute and water, which mainly affects the structure of ...

Impurity effects at hydrophobic surfaces [PDF]
The effective charge of hydrophobic surfaces and in particular of the air–water interface is a crucial parameter for electrochemistry, colloidal chemistry and interfacial science, but different experiments give conflicting estimates. Zeta-potential and disjoining-pressure measurements point to a strongly negative surface charge, often interpreted as ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Kosmotropes and chaotropes: modelling preferential exclusion, binding and aggregate stability [PDF]
Kosmotropic cosolvents added to an aqueous solution promote the aggregation of hydrophobic solute particles, while chaotropic cosolvents act to destabilise such aggregates. We discuss the mechanism for these phenomena within an adapted version of the two-

The molecular structure of the interface between water and a hydrophobic substrate is liquid-vapor like [PDF]
With molecular simulation for water and a tunable hydrophobic substrate, we apply the instantaneous interface construction [A. P. Willard and D. Chandler, J. Phys. Chem. B, 114, 1954 (2010)] to examine the similarity between a water-vapor interface and a

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Symmetry effects and equivalences in lattice models of hydrophobic interaction
We establish the equivalence of a recently introduced discrete model of the hydrophobic interaction, as well as its extension to continuous state variables, with the Ising model in a magnetic field with temperature-dependent strength. In order to capture
