Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Reações orgânicas em meio aquoso

open access: yesQuímica Nova, 2001
The use of water as solvent in organic reactions has been uncommon for several reasons, among them the low solubility of the reactants, the incompatibility of the intermediates with water, and the competition between the desired reaction and hydrolysis ...

Effect of biocomposite edible coatings based on pea starch and guar gum on nutritional quality of ‘Valencia’ orange during storage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Application of environmentally friendly components is an approach for substitution of synthetic substances in commercial waxes applied to citrus. In this study, the effect of biocomposite edible coatings based on pea starch and guar gum (PSGG) on total ...

Thermodynamics of the Hydrophobic Effect [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2001
A thermodynamic theory is developed describing the transfer process of nonpolar substances from water to their pure state and the micellization process. The basis of the theory is the consideration, experimentally supported, that to a first-order approximation the change in the standard molar entropy (ΔS°) can be consider proportional to the standard ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Conductometric study of sodium dodecyl sulfate - nonionic surfactant (Triton X-100, Tween 20, Tween 60, Tween 80 or Tween 85) mixed micelles in aqueous solution [PDF]

open access: yesHemijska Industrija, 2012
The present study is concerned with the determination of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of mixed micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate with one of five nonionic surfactants (Triton X-100, Tween 20, Tween 60, Tween 80 or Tween 85) from ...

Effect of hydrophobic solutes on the liquid-liquid critical point

open access: yes, 2010
Jagla ramp particles, interacting through a ramp potential with two characteristic length scales, are known to show in their bulk phase thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies, similar to what is found in water.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Polymeric ultralong organic phosphorescence with excellent humidity and temperature resistance via hydrophobic effect

open access: yesAggregate
Polymeric ultralong organic phosphorescence (UOP) with persistent emission is of great importance in practical applications. However, achieving good water‐resistance for long‐term environmental stability is a formidable challenge.

On the Effective Charge of Hydrophobic Polyelectrolytes [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2008
In this paper, we analyze the behavior of hydrophobic polyelectrolytes. It has been proposed that this system adopts a pearl necklace structure reminiscent of the Rayleigh instability of a charged droplet. Using a Poisson-Boltzmann approach, we calculate the counterion distribution around a given pearl, assuming the latter to be penetrable for the ...
