An Elasto–Plastic Hydro–Mechanical Model for Analyzing the Swelling Behavior of Heterogeneous Clay–Sulfate Rocks

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Swelling of clay‐sulfate rocks is a concern in geotechnical engineering that can damage infrastructure. In the historic town of Staufen in southwest Germany, geothermal drilling into a swellable anhydrite‐bearing clay formation resulted in water inflow and subsequent swelling, triggering ground heave and damage to more than 250 houses.

Influence of magnesium addition on microstructural and mechanical stability of hydrostatically extruded biodegradable zinc alloys

open access: yesBioactive Materials
Pure and low-alloy zinc holds significant potential for use in biodegradable devices, such as coronary stents. However, its thermal stability has not yet been thoroughly characterized.

Hydro‐Mechanical Modelling of Gas Migration in Bentonite: Formulation and Laboratory‐Scale Validation

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gas generation and migration in bentonite buffer materials are critical processes affecting the performance of deep geological repositories for radioactive waste. This study presents a new hydro‐mechanical formulation for simulating gas migration in saturated, compacted bentonite, with particular emphasis on the role of non‐uniform stress ...

Impact of Weak‐Constraint Four‐Dimensional Variational data assimilation on the prediction of a sudden stratospheric warming event in 2024

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The Weak‐Constraint Four‐Dimensional Variational (WC‐4DVAR) system markedly improved the analysis and forecasting of the 2024 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event. It reduced biases and enhanced 7–9 day predictions of temperature across the SSW life cycle, with the most pronounced gains for winds also during the critical onset period.

Enhancing severe convection forecasts with microwave radiance assimilation in limited‐area models

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Microwave satellite radiances remain largely underexploited in convection‐permitting limited‐area models. We assess the assimilation of humidity‐sensitive radiances from the MHS instrument in the operational ICON‐2I model, improving the precipitation forecast of a severe convective event over the Marche region, Italy, substantially by correcting ...

Low acoustic impedance arc-shaped chiral metamaterials for low-frequency and broadband underwater sound insulation

open access: yesMaterials & Design
This work proposes an arc-shaped chiral metamaterial (ACM) for low-frequency underwater sound insulation. The equivalent parameters of the designed arc-shaped chiral lattice (ACL) in the metamaterial are derived and evaluated using homogenization method.

ADAPT: An Autonomous Forklift for Construction Site Operation

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Efficient material logistics are critical in controlling costs and schedules in the construction industry. However, manual material handling remains prone to inefficiencies, delays, and safety risks. Autonomous forklifts offer a solution to streamline on‐site logistics, reducing reliance on human operators and mitigating labor shortages.

Scientific basis of the theory of vehicles braking with stepless hydrostatic mechanical transmissions

open access: yesAustrian Journal of Technical and Natural Sciences, 2015
This paper presents the results of studies of kinematic, power and energy parameters distribution of hydrostatic mechanical transmissions. The influence of ways to implement the service and emergency braking, operational conditions, the laws of pressing the brake pedal and the laws of parameters change for regulation of hydraulic machines of ...
