Design of High Damping Hydrostatic Gas Thrust Bearing with Grid-Shaped Grooves.

open access: yesTRANSACTIONS OF THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Series C, 1995
In this study we propose a design of a new hydrostatic gas annular thrust bearing with grid-shaped grooves which can provide high damping ratio in a desired high-frequency region as well as high stiffness. The basic idea to increase the gas film damping at a high-frequency region is to form a set of small-width bearings in a high static pressure region

Numerical Modeling of Hydrogen‐Assisted Cracking With Phase Field Regularized Cohesive Zone Model and Penalty‐Based Moving Hydrogen Boundary Condition

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The degradation of metallic materials due to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) poses critical challenges for structural reliability. Phase‐field models offer an energy‐based approach that does not require predefined crack paths and automatically determines crack initiation, growth, and coalescence.

An eye on long‐duration spaceflight: Controversies, countermeasures and challenges

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Space flight‐associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS) is a consequence of long‐duration space flight and is detected in two‐thirds of astronauts. In‐flight, this can cause a change in the refraction of the eyes, requiring graded hypermetropic ‘superfocus adjustable’ glasses, optic nerve head oedema and choroidal folds.

Shallow grooves in journal improve air bearing performance [PDF]

open access: yes, 1968
Bearing designs, which shape the surface to create artificial fluid-film wedges in the absence of any applied radial load, generate radial restoring forces to keep journals from whirling.

Jumping on the moon as a potential exercise countermeasure

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The Moon's gravitational field strength (17% Earth's gravity) may facilitate the use of bodyweight jumping as an exercise countermeasure against musculoskeletal and cardiovascular deconditioning in reduced gravity settings. The present study characterised the acute physiological and kinetic responses to bodyweight jumping in simulated Lunar ...

Spaceborne and spaceborn: Physiological aspects of pregnancy and birth during interplanetary flight

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Crewed interplanetary return missions that are on the planning horizon will take years, more than enough time for initiation and completion of a pregnancy. Pregnancy is viewed as a sequence of processes – fertilization, blastocyst formation, implantation, gastrulation, placentation, organogenesis, gross morphogenesis, birth and neonatal ...

Evaluation of a hybrid hydrostatic bearing for cryogenic turbopump application [PDF]

open access: yes
A hybrid hydrostatic bearing was designed to operate in liquid hydrogen at speeds to 80,000 rpm and radial loads to 440 n (100 lbf). The bearing assembly consisted of a pair of 20-mm angular-contact ball bearings encased in a journal, which was in turn ...

Vibration Analysis of Hydrostatic Gas Bearing Spindle Considering the Elastic Deformation of Rotor.

open access: yesTRANSACTIONS OF THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Series C, 1996
In this study, we present the vibration analysis procedure of a hydrostatic gas bearing spindle considering the stiffness and damping of a gas film and the effect of elastic deformation of the components of a rotor. An equation of motion for the elastic vibration of the rotor is formulated using the finite element method and then combined with the ...
