Life in hot springs and hydrothermal vents [PDF]
Hot springs and hydrothermal systems occurring within volcanic areas are inhabited by hyperthermophilic microorganisms, some of which grow at temperatures up to 110 degrees C. Hyperthermophiles grow anaerobically or aerobically by diverse metabolic types. Within the high temperature ecosystems, primary production is independent from solar energy.

Long-Term Stability of Back-Arc Basin Hydrothermal Vents
Since the discovery of hydrothermal vents 40-years ago, long-term time-series have focused on mid-ocean ridge systems. Based on these studies, hydrothermal vents are widely considered to be dynamic, ephemeral habitats.

Chemosymbiotic species inhabiting deep-sea hydrothermal vents are known to rely on microbial symbionts for nutrition. However, the relative contributions of heterotrophic energy sources to their diets remain poorly understood.

Metals in the shell of Bathymodiolus azoricus from a hydrothermal vent site on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge [PDF]
Specimens of the mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus were collected from Menez Gwen, a relatively shallow (850 m) hydrothermal vent field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Each bivalve shell (n = 21) was individually cleaned by selective chemical.

Mapping the resilience of chemosynthetic communities in hydrothermal vent fields
Hydrothermal vent fields are vulnerable to natural disturbances, such as volcanic activity, and are currently being considered as targets for mineral mining. Local vent communities are linked by pelagic larval dispersal and form regional metacommunities,

Isolation and characterization of a thermophilic, obligately anaerobic and heterotrophic marine Chloroflexi bacterium from a Chloroflexi dominated microbial community associated with a Japanese shallow hydrothermal system, and proposal for Thermomarinilinea lacunofontalis gen. nov., sp. nov. [PDF]
A novel marine thermophilic and heterotrophic Anaerolineae bacterium in the phylum Chloroflexi, strain SW7T, was isolated from an in situ colonization system deployed in the main hydrothermal vent of the Taketomi submarine hot spring field located on the

Hydrothermal vent communities are distributed along mid-ocean spreading ridges as isolated patches. While distance is a key factor influencing connectivity among sites, habitat characteristics are also critical. The Pescadero Basin (PB) and Alarcón Rise (
