Therapeutic Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen in the Process of Wound Healing.
Current pharmaceutical design, 2019Chronic and non-healing wounds, especially diabetic foot ulcers and radiation injuries, imply a remarkable morbidity with a significant effect on the quality of life and a high sanitary cost.

Hyperbaric oxygen — 100 percent oxygen at two to three times the atmospheric pressure at sea level — can result in arterial oxygen tension in excess of 2000 mm Hg1 and oxygen tension in tissue of almost 400 mm Hg.2,3 Such doses of oxygen have a number of beneficial biochemical, cellular, and physiologic effects, and today there are 259 hyperbaric ...

Hyperbaric oxygen in neurosurgery
Acta Neurochirurgica, 2009The therapeutic use of pure oxygen, even under hyperbaric conditions, has been well established for about 50 years, whereas the discovery of oxygen occurred 250 years earlier. Many neurosurgical patients suffer from brain tissue damage, due to reduced blood flow, obstructive vessel disease, or as a result of traumatic brain injury. The application of ...

Efficacy of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Diabetic Foot Ulcers Based on Wagner Classification
Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, 2018Diabetic foot ulcer is a common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus. In addition to conventional primary therapy, there are adjuvant therapy methods such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the healing of diabetic foot ulcer wounds.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is the administration of 100 percent oxygen at greater than normal atmospheric pressure. It is administered in a hyperbaric chamber. It is the primary treatment modality for acute carbon monoxide poisoning, acute gas embolism, and decompression sickness and is used as adjunctive treatment for compromised skin grafts, gas

To the Editor.— The article by Heng et al 1 in the MayArchivesmakes me wonder what advantage there is to topical "hyperbaric" oxygen over simple topical ambient pressure oxygen (bag unpressurized). Henry's law states that the diffusion of a gas into a liquid (in this case, oxygen into the wound surface) is directly proportional to its partial pressure.

Cerebellum and hyperbaric oxygen
Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology, 1968Abstract This research analyzed the role of the cerebellum in the mechanism of the start and development of hyperoxic seizures in unrestrained, unanesthetized rats. In a first group of animals the behavior of the electrical activity of the cerebellum during hyperbaric oxygen (5 atm. abs. for 2–4 h) was investigated.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves intermittent inhalation of 100% oxygen under a pressure greater than 1 atm. Despite over a century of use in medical settings, hyperbaric oxygen remains a controversial therapy. The last 20 years have seen a clarification of the mechanism of action of hyperbaric therapy and a greater understanding of its potential ...
