Use of adjunctive glycaemic agents with vascular protective properties in individuals with type 1 diabetes: Potential benefits and risks

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 27, Issue 6, Page 2920-2939, June 2025.
Abstract Glycaemic therapy in type 1 diabetes (T1D) is focused on insulin, with the majority of studies investigating different insulin preparations, delivery devices and dosing accuracy methods. While insulin deficiency is the key mechanism for hyperglycaemia in T1D, individuals with this condition can also develop insulin resistance (IR), making ...

On the mechanism of separation of ethanol/water mixtures by pervaporation I. Calculations of concentration profiles [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
A solution—diffusion model for the permeation of liquid mixtures through polymeric membranes taking into account coupling of fluxes has been developed.

The ‘nephrotoxins’ were stopped: what is in a name and its impact on kidney and cardiac health?

open access: yesInternal Medicine Journal, Volume 55, Issue 6, Page 1037-1041, June 2025.
Abstract The term ‘nephrotoxin’ is often imprecisely applied to medications that are not inherently toxic to the kidneys, including renin‐angiotensin‐aldosterone system inhibitors, sodium‐glucose co‐transporter 2 inhibitors, diuretics and metformin. These drugs are frequently included in ‘sick day rules’ and may be prematurely discontinued during acute

Renal Function in Suckling and Fasting Pups of the Northern Elephant Seal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Elephant seals fast for prolonged periods without access to water. This is made possible, in part, by reductions in urine production. However, the mechanisms involved in reducing urine production are not understood.

Description of unilateral kidney embolism and contralateral nephrectomy as a less invasive remnant kidney model in cats; a proof‐of‐concept study

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 886-895, May 2025.
Unilateral, minimally invasive, renal arterial embolization and delayed contralateral nephrectomy was described in cats as a novel remnant kidney model of chronic kidney disease using two doses of embolic particles. Renal function declined and characteristic histopathological markers of kidney disease were present 6 months after the embolism procedure.

Renal hyperfiltration is independently associated with increased all-cause mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes: a prospective cohort study

open access: yesBMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, 2020
Introduction In addition to favoring renal disease progression, renal ‘hyperfiltration’ has been associated with an increased risk of death, though it is unclear whether and how excess mortality is related to increased renal function.

Hyperfiltration and Albuminuria—A Deadly Combination [PDF]

open access: yesUS Endocrinology, 2017
I ndividuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at high risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), and roughly half die of CHD without developing end-stage renal disease. Two key kidney measurements: estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria, are consistently associated with high CHD risk.

Association between remnant cholesterol and chronic kidney disease: Systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 27, Issue 5, Page 2573-2583, May 2025.
Abstract Background and Aims Adequate lipid control has emerged as a key factor in the prevention and management of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Remnant cholesterol (RC), a lipoprotein with an established association with cardiovascular risk, has been investigated in the context of CKD.

Microalbuminuria as Predictor of Early Glomerular Injury in Children and Adolescents with Sickle Cell Anaemia at Muhimbili National Hospital Dar es Salaam, Tanzania 2012 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Microalbuminuria (MA) is the earliest marker of various diseases affecting the renal system. Its relevance in children and adolescents with sickle cell anaemia (SCA), who are known to be prone to renal complications, has not been fully explored in our ...
