We describe the first local use of hypericin as photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy in a patient with recurrent malignant mesothelioma. Hypericin is a polycyclic quinone, which has been shown to possess in vivo and in vitro antiretroviral and photosensitizing activity; moreover, it is used in depressive disorders.

Theoretical study of hypericin
Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A: Chemistry, 2005Electronic properties and phototoxic reactions of the hypericin molecule are explored by the use of density functional theory, integral equation formalism polarised continuum model (to include solvent effects) and a time-dependent formalism for the study of singlet and triplet excited states.

Hypericin and hypericin-like substances: Analytical problems
1998Abstract Hypericin is a substance derived from Hypericum perforatum L., a plant utilized in the production of extracts used to aromatize alcoholic beverages and soft drinks and limited in food and beverages by the E.E.C. Directives on Flavouring. This paper deals with the H.P.L.C.

Antiviral activities of hypericin
Antiviral Research, 1991Hypericin, a photodynamic plant quinone, readily inactivated murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV), Sindbis virus, and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), especially on exposure to fluorescent light. Sindbis virus was significantly more sensitive than MCMV.

Properties and Permeability of Hypericin and Brominated Hypericin in Lipid Membranes
Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation, 2009The promising photosensitizing properties of hypericin, a substituted phenanthroperylene quinone naturally found in Saint John's wort, has led to the proposal that it can be utilized in photodynamic therapy. Structurally modified derivatives are at the present time being investigated to generate a more effective hypericin photosensitizer.
