Electrophysiology of Hypokalemia and Hyperkalemia [PDF]
Potassium (K+) was first isolated as an element in 1807 by Sir Humphrey Davy when he electrolyzed potash (plant ashes soaked in pots of water), for which its name is derived. Despite the organic origin of its isolation, however, K+’s role in biology was not elucidated until the 20th century.

Pregnancy after liver transplantation under tacrolimus [PDF]
Background. The maternal and fetal risk of pregnancy after organ transplantation under tacrolimus has not been reported. This was prospectively studied in 27 pregnancies by 21 female liver recipients who were treated with tacrolimus before and throughout

Life-Threatening Hyperkalemia following Low-Dose Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole: A Case Report
Hyperkalemia is a known adverse effect of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, usually occurring at high doses. However, fatal hyperkalemia at low doses has rarely been reported.

Acute hypocalcemia and metabolic alkalosis in children on cation-exchange resin therapy [PDF]
Background. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) is a chelating agent used for the treatment of hyperkalemia. SPS has a wide range of exchange capacity requiring close monitoring of serum electrolytes.

Hyperkalemia: Prevalence, Predictors and Emerging Treatments
It is well established that an elevated potassium level (hyperkalemia) is associated with a risk of adverse events including morbidity, mortality and healthcare system cost. Hyperkalemia is commonly encountered in many chronic conditions including kidney

Abstract Sodium‐glucose cotransporter‐2 (SGLT2) inhibitors represent one of the main cornerstones of heart failure treatment. Nevertheless, while the cardiovascular beneficial effects of these drugs have been clearly demonstrated by several clinical trials, in clinical practice, it remains challenging to identify the appropriate timing to start SGLT2 ...

Narrative Review of Incremental Hemodialysis. [PDF]
The prescription of hemodialysis (HD) in patients with incident end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is fundamentally empirical. The abrupt transition from nondialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) to thrice-weekly in-center HD of much the same dialysis ...
