Hyperscanning: Simultaneous fMRI during Linked Social Interactions

open access: yesNeuroImage, 2002
"Plain question and plain answer make the shortest road out of most perplexities." Mark Twain-Life on the Mississippi. A new methodology for the measurement of the neural substrates of human social interaction is described. This technology, termed "Hyperscan," embodies both the hardware and the software necessary to link magnetic resonance scanners ...

Exploring how healthcare teams balance the neurodynamics of autonomous and collaborative behaviors: a proof of concept

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2022
Team members co-regulate their activities and move together at the collective level of behavior while coordinating their actions toward shared goals. In parallel with team processes, team members need to resolve uncertainties arising from the changing ...

Neural Foundations Supporting Prosocial Behaviors: A Scoping Review of EEG/ERP Evidence During Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood

open access: yesPsychophysiology, Volume 63, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Adolescence is a particularly important period for prosocial development given the foundational changes that occur in social and reward neural systems. Despite the temporal and developmental advantages of electroencephalography (EEG), no studies have compiled and analyzed existing EEG evidence of adolescent prosocial development.

Neural Mechanisms of Bidirectional Visuo‐Linguistic Transformation in Interactive Communication

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, Volume 47, Issue 7, May 2026.
Using hyperscanning fMRI and a role‐switching task, we examined how individuals transform visual input into language and reconstruct imagery from speech. Whole‐brain analyses identified key regions, and effective connectivity among IFG, FFA, and IPS revealed dynamic, role‐dependent shifts in information flow direction.

EEG hyperscanning and behavioral synchronization during a joint actions [PDF]

open access: yesNeuropsychological Trends, 2018
Brain-to-brain coupling during cooperation is a core question of study on social interactions. The aim of the present study was to investigate the neural basis of interbrain cooperation and the cognitive performance underlying the execution of jointactions by using EEG coherence measures.

Interpersonal Neural Synchronization Predicting Learning Outcomes From Teaching-Learning Interaction: A Meta-Analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2022
In school education, teaching-learning interaction is deemed as a core process in the classroom. The fundamental neural basis underlying teaching-learning interaction is proposed to be essential for tuning learning outcomes.

Mother–Child Synchrony and Behavioral Problems in Chinese Children: A Preliminary fNIRS‐Hyperscanning Study

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Parent–child synchrony, defined as the coordination of biological and behavioral processes during social interactions, serves as a critical predictor of children's psychological health and behavioral outcomes. Although recent research has examined its neurobiological underpinnings, the longitudinal relationship between mother ...

A systematic review of hyperscanning in clinical encounters

open access: yesNeuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews
Therapeutic alliance is defined as the collaborative relationship between patient and therapist. Strong therapeutic alliances have been associated with positive clinical outcomes, but much remains unknown about alliance and its physiological basis.

The Effect of Task Performance and Partnership on Interpersonal Brain Synchrony during Cooperation

open access: yesBrain Sciences, 2022
Interpersonal brain synchrony (IBS) during cooperation has not been systematically investigated. To address this research gap, this study assessed neural synchrony during a cooperative jigsaw puzzle solving task using functional near-infrared ...
